All part of the Demoscene. Its not compression too much more than it is controlling how dynamically created content is displayed to the user. Such as abusing the principals of sin/tan and other fancy math thingamajigers.

I seem to remember "the product" having some kind of FPS style game based on the same obscene limitations. Was like 100kb and looked damn fine for the 15 seconds of loading time -- couldnt do a whole lot though.

Its a shame game developers dont use these methods or something similar. It would be nice to not require 6gb of HDD space for an f'ing game. Not to mention, Ive missed out on many-a-game demos because the file sizes for pretty much everything are beyond stupid these days.

Goddamn dialup.

The makers of the game "Spore" are trying to make "procedural" content the next buzzword on everybodies lips.

A lot more demos on www.pouet.net

You refer to kkrieger.

It wasn't due to compression cerium, so much simply that the entire thing was being made in assembly.
So certainly, the reduction in size and increase in performances are phenomenal.
However, modifying content for such a game is a catastrophe.
Now imagine today's games with their advanced engines...all those settings and changes made throughout development and even post-retail...no thanks.
Not to even mention anything of an online game.

Ive never once mentioned anything about compression, that was someone else.

Also, its not so much that its in assembly, but the fact theyre not storing the images in some standard format, theyre just describing the images in a way that lends itself to very tiny file sizes.

I still think it could and should be done for retail games. The fact that you need an 80gb hard drive if you plan on installing a game made in the last 5 years pisses me off.

Cerium, I will gladly send you some money if you want cable/dsl. Do you not get those services where you live? We can all sign a petition to get a dsl line out there. I'd be willing to donate to the "Get Cerium off Dial-up" fund. You got a paypal account?

I'm with cerium on that one.
In general, coders nowdays tend to rely on the ever-growing standard of performance and increase in volume of capacity.
They're being lazy instead of shelling out good, optimized, code that'll save system resources and allow weaker systems to run it decently.
