7zip is free and open source which supports pretty much every archive format around, including its own unique archive format 7z. Winrar costs money and is the only one that can create rar format files, as that is their proprietary format and require a license to use it (anyone can uncompress it through).

I have been using WinRAR for years and havn't paid for it. And it compresses and everything just fine.

WinRAR just keeps prompting you to pay if your lease date expires. I guess they're using the annoyance method.
