Hmm, I believe I once saw somewhere, that on the forums you can actually message someone if you are both browsing the forums. Like a chat client or something, but on the forums instead. This could be helpful, so instead of 2 people posting right after another, and dont wanna add them to AIM/MSN or anything. They can just message you via the forums messenger thing. Just an idea....

There are both a phpBB mod plug for this as well as third party softwares.
