Cerium, still haven't found a decent unix host with telnet access and java support?
Cerium - Sat Dec 31, 2005 1:07 pm
Post subject:
Not one that has a decent price.
SpecShip - Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:56 pm
Post subject:
Well, you ask a lot, sort of; And that costs.
Telnet access is a security hole, hosts that allow it either don't bother packing their server with much else because they expect one of the clients to frag it or charge very much for the priviledge.
Getting a low price + java + bandwidth/HD/etc., well...it has to cost.
You could probably get a semi-dedicated server for a decent ($50/mo?) price, which is more likely to allow telnet, but it's still gonna be rare to find.

Not to make a jab, but if you forfeit java and move to C, then you'll probably have a lot less trouble finding a decent unix+telnet host at a comfortable price.

I have no control over certian accesses. I mainly setup prices. I do get profit from signups. $1.00 for domain, $5.00 for Business hosting. It's cool, sign up and you can get money too. http://resellerspanel.com

ROFL. Bullshit reseller. Hahaha.
I like the part where it says Unrestricted bandwidth then follows with 300 GB Transfer.
Nice contradiction, not to mention bogus offer as there is no way a puny reseller can offer either.
At most, you'll be scratching barrel bottom to provide 3GB per 10 clients.

2.5 GBits network connectivity, did your ethernet card broke? That is weak.

I bet those guys are resellers themselves.

It's like tapperware salesmen, used cars or insurance people.
You need to have a keen cunny business fuck-people-for-money talent.
Then you can work reseller shit and make big bucks.
Someone like you bdwinsalt, however, will never make it.

People who buy reseller plans either know their shit, have a viable business plan and the reseller deal they have is a geniuinely strong one to backup multitude of customers or they are suckers falling for the spider's web trap.

As far as the "Unrestricted Bandwidth" goes, they probably mean that they arent going to cap you out at 10k/sec, you use what is availible.

What do you need telnet for anyway with webhosting? That is, unless you plan on doing other things from the webhosting package other than running a website.

Also, some hosts will turn it on by request even if they advertise no ssh access.

Just one use for telnet is unzipping. cPanel provides this through an HTML interface, but obviously I would prefer just a command prompt.

I'd like to know why "telnet access" is a security hole.
And why do you people care for the reason of requesting telnet access? If someone wants it, why isn't he free to ask for it?

It is a security hole just as bad as an open wireless point is. Everything sent over it is send in cleartext.

As for the reason why people ask, it is mostly so the person giving it out knows that the user will understand what he can and cannot do with the terminal. If the person responds back "to use VI to make small changes to websites quickly", you'll get the feeling that they know what they are doing. If the person responds back "to admin stuff and things" it is most likely their first command they'll type is 'dir', which I like to set as a shell script which list every file in their home directory with the text Removing... in front.

Granting shell access is no more of a security risk than FTP or PHP. It is just more likely they'll attempt to run applications on the server that they shouldn't be, because it is much easier to run something like ASSS via a terminal than through a PHP command, which is possible but an ugly hack. Just never grant telnet, always force SSH onto the users.

SyrusMX wrote:

Obviously that's an option too, but requires more bandwidth. Come on, don't tell me you didn't think of that. I'm just stating a reason why someone might want telnet (although, as MGB says, SSH is better).

Phong, I would much rather accept hosting from quan chi, as he will be too busy making a malicious veebee app to steal any and all passwords sitting in my files.

Solo Ace - Wed Jan 04, 2006 2:31 am
Post subject:
So yeah MGB, FTP/HTTP/IRC are all security holes too.

I see more sense in the matter of what would be sent over those lines as a security hole than the protocol itself.

I wouldn't use telnet for remote administration, I just think a telnet (or telnet-like) connection is fine for what it can do.
Of course I agree, though, if security comes in sight, press the red button.

I was reading on what telnet is and from the site I found it was basicaly saying it was a server program that allows people to connect to it and use it as if they where sitting right in front of the server.. secruity hole would be the fact that it will allow a user to run any program they upload to the server like a virus for example. But perhaps the site I found for it was for a different program.

I'll agree Grav did help out some but the point still remains... just like under his new name hes still a ass and will always be a ass no matter what name he chooses... leaving would be doing us all a favor so you know that wont happen. Talking crap to and acting like you was more important then anyone on this board was the downfall of your staffing for MGB and 10 times out of 10 it was uncalled for, I am sure I could find some post on here that prove my point but im too lazy to bother with it.

I guess since I am a retired SS/Continuum player I should stop helping others and visiting this forum? Whatever, I know i've given alot to this board and have helped many of the newbies with there server problems.. especialy the ones that where linked to firewall and router problems and thats why I am still here today.
