What's the best one out there? I mean, I don't need too much space; I'm mostly hosting text, minimal pictures. So what's the best one out there that doesn't have stupid ads?

Web hosts give banners and ads to help pay for the costs. If you ever do find a web host that gives free hosting with no banners or ads, come tell me.

With that attitude I don't think anyone would be willing to help you. Respect the people you are asking help from. And I said I don't know of any.

Those we (Shanky and I) host, we do for free. Also, we require them not to put up any paid advertisements at all, otherwise we'll boot them.

Well miss, you might want to be a bit kinder when you are asking a free forums for free assistance in finding a free host. Usually people do free things to be nice. When people are not nice, usually they have a hard time finding assistance even from paid help.

So you take your anger out on a free forum for free help? I'd say you ask someone else. Just to be nice, i'll give you one site.

www.netfirms.com

Search google.

(Btw, if you cant find the free hosting package, maybe i'll give you a tip)

Do you have your own domain? If you want a subdomain, I own catgrinder.com, joesweird.com, ss-network.net (expires soon) and syrusmx.com. I also have access on ssforum.net and sscentral.com if you want a subdomain there. Either way, if you still want free webhosting, lemme know.

No I don't have my own domain Syrus. I was however searching for an attractive simple url also. I dislike them when you have to go through like webhost/web/users/account/name blah blah... it gets really old... thanks though.

Thanks for the link to Netfirms. I completely forgot about them.
Thanks to Default for the link to 50megs.

If anyone has any others, please let me know. icon_biggrin.gif

Also try www.geocities.com

You can also buy a domain for like $3..

Geocities isn't bad, but I'd rather not have that gaudy looking banner, and I'm not up for hacking my way around it either. But thanks again for the other suggestions, and keep em' coming.

It's just a personal site, for journal, email, poetry, photos, etc. I probably only need about 200 megs, decent bandwidth, and whatever those of you with more experience would think.

Here's what I may get. Tell me if you think it's a good deal.

Hmm intresting Syrus $$ sa_tongue.gif. I mainly use my free package for little things like 15kb files. Etc. I Think thats a good plan though.

Try Geocities or summit, they have adds but you can remove them easily.

Now why would you use geocities? In all honesty, their service sucks. I hate Geocities, they need to die. There's plenty of people in this game with server resources that are willing to give free hosting.

Agreed with Syrus. There are plenty of people on this site that would give you subdomain hosting for free. I would, but I only have 100MB and it seems you want more than that. icon_razz.gif

Only if the website is (going to be) SS related.

well freewebs.com if you know html you can get away without ads (you just have to have a link on there somewhere saying hosted by freewebs.com or whatever). like if you can use frames or tables you just get the one where you "import stuff onto a site" and just code there without ads.

Why are you even talking about this? So many people have already offered free, as in really free, webhosting.

Everyone and their dog, cat, hamster, gerbil, dead gerbil, and the pope has their own website these days. And because web hosts are forced to give increasing amounts of space at the same price due to the demand of the market they generally end up with more space than they know what to do with.

Thus, everyone ends up giving it away just to have a use for it. I don't host a single domain that uses anywhere near its max diskspace. This is where overselling has come into play in the business. They count on you not using all of your space so they can afford to give you however much you want and continue to sell space they don't have. It's a common tactic.

Anyway, that concludes web hosting 101. The point is that you can get free webhosting anywhere these days. There's even people out there setting up servers just to run free webhosting.

If you're looking for a certain host with specific features, i'd suggest looking at http://free-webhosts.com/ . It's a great site with a HUGE database of free hosts being updated every day. I've used it many, many times to look for decent free hosting but I couldn't be arsed any more. I'd recommend go ahead and spending the extra few dollars for hosting and a domain.
