Trash Talk - Know anything about engines?

With gas prices as high as they are right now, I've been trying to drive the most economically I possibly can. I have a manual, which means I can choose between keeping the revs low (1.5-2.5) and giving it slightly more gas or keeping them high (2-3) and not pushing so hard. Anybody know which is actually better? My best bet is the latter, but really that's just a guess.

Does it matter? We'll soon be using wormholes/space<-->time continuum anyhow.

I don't know the answer to your question.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but:
The lower RPM's you use, the less gas you use. and 3k rpm's is still low.

So it's really up to you.

I drive a hyundai accent. Granted, it's not manual but it gets 32 miles to the gallon and it costs me $26 to fill my gas tank from E to full.

The lower rpms will help save a little gas but you would be smart to replace your fuel filter, pcv valve, make sure the plug's and wires are good, and hmm clean out the trottle body... should help with gas mileage. I would also run a bottle of gas treatment and a bottle of octane booster in the gas after you do all of that... Last time I did that I got around 30 miles to a gallon out of a mustang... haven't tried it on my eclipse yet. Also check the air filter... if its dirty replace it too.

Work farther from home so you drive on the freeway more. tongue.gif

Ford "Mustang" (Escort) - 4-door compact - I have gotten anywhere between 30mpg-35mpg in the past month. Total I would say I've gotten between 24mpg - 40 mpg. The latter being when I drove from Western Wyoming to Central Nebraska on one tank. tongue.gif

Ride a motorcycle. Really helps on the gas mileage, and fun to boot.

Another option is to be a computer geek like myself. I've recorded every single time I ever purchased gas for any of my vehicles, except the motorcycle, since I don't always have a writing instrument with me when I'm buying gas, and its too damn often when I go on long rides. I just do the math in my head, and remember it that way for my bike.

So what does all this recording have to do? Well, pretty excel charts, stupid! The one huge spike in MPG was because it was 99% open roads going around 70 MPH the whole trip. I went home to visit my parents, and their gas was cheap as hell, so I filled up, even though I filled up two days before.

I was thinking of buying a motorcycle, but 1) I don't trust myself with one, and 2) I live in MN, which means I'd get to drive it maybe 6-7 months out of the year.

Oh, I definitely already thought of that one, but my mom won't let me. icon_sad.gif And you know, those charts really don't do much.

And by my dad's calculations it gets about 30 city driving, which is pretty good.

Most statistics don't, but they look pretty. I don't do charts often, I just look at the statistics after each fill up, and judge why it is how it is. Usually, its because its a 6 minute drive (3 miles on a bypass) to work, so thats why its pretty low. I just don't go anywhere in a car. This summer even more so, since I bought a motorcycle.

I dont see you getting much over 30 mpg but if you check the stuff I told you then you might get a few extra mpg. I use to be a GM mechanic if that helps you know that I know my chit icon_smile.gif
