I use Analyzer for sniffing. http://analyzer.polito.it/

I absolutely loath Ethereal's UI.

You judge an entire app. by its UI?
That's like saying UO sux because it's graphics are inferior to some korean junk of a MMORPG.

So, is that the new politicaly-correct pretty word - analyzer?

Alex> Otherwise known as a packet editor it's used to sniff yr protocol up and so we can haxor your ass.
*zzz*
Competitor> What is a network analyzer?

An application can be powerful, but if users can't use it (easily) it might as well be no good. Sure, you can take the time to learn how to use it; but I like programs that I can quickly access and adapt to.

I put a lot of stock in useability. If Ethereal was far far superior, it WOULD make a difference, but Analyzer does what I need.

Useability / UI is everything for people who are not that into computers and people that don't want to dive into an application.
(Useability is a hard thing, even windows makes mistakes here and there)

I love the case-study of Killer Robot we studied in our Software Development course this past spring. My professor has been trying to implement more of an ethic's portion into the CSC majors - and included this into the discussion.

Quick summary: a robot operator is killed at his terminal after an error message appeared on the screen. They have been investigating the cause of the death: was it because the programmer misinturpreted the physics formulas? was it because of the faulty interface? was it just inadaquate training?

Chapter 6 is the discussion of the importance of well-designed interfaces. Because in this case study, had it been changed, it may have saved his life.

Though it's a hypothetical case-study, it sure opens-the-eyes of those developers out there who are responsible for systems that may cause potential injury or death to people. This is where a discussion of whether or not Software -engineers- should be certified like any other profession. That can be held for another day. icon_wink.gif

Do you even know what a UI is? A good UI is all about the gameplay.

Thats like my aunt who used to work on flight control systems for F-14s. If they fuck up and there's a bug in the system, they have to notify the next of kin
