First thing you do, you don't listen to any of these dumb newbies, specially if they're on my ignore list.

Second thing you do, is everything Katie tells you because she's the Internet Diva.

Third thing you do, is go get WoW, because this game is barely subspace anymore and is mostly fad.

Fourth thing you do, if you really still want to play in this corrupted cesspool that'll eat you up and spit you out and most probably you'll end up in one of the skilless newbie zones which mean you're lost cause and shouldn't be bothered for to begin with:

1. Run the client, check the name of the window title if it reads "version 0.38" then you need to download this http://www.subspacedownloads.com/files/continuum039pr1.zip - extract it into the game's folder and have it overwrite existing files.
You'll end up with two files, the previous "continuum.exe" and "Continuum039pr1.exe"; The first one you aren't going to run, but DO NOT delete it, it's still required, you are going to play by running the second one from now on (the one with 039pr1 at the end of it).

2. Are the zone's names in green or red? Are they showing any player count? Ping times? If they're red, press the "zones" button (or ctrl+z), a window will open, at the bottom of it will be "Directory Server Adress List" below it is a text box, put this in that text box: sscentral.subspace.inet.fi

3. Press the "download" button under "download new zones" then just highlight the zone you want in your list and press the "add zone(s)" button (I suggest you jump right in and get SSCX Chaos/League Zone SVS and learn how to really play the game, it'll be tough, you'll die a lot, but you'll catch up faster and once you master it you can own in any dumb newbie zone), when you're done press the "ok".

4. Now click on the "profile" button (or ctrl+p), a window will open - here you'll create a new alias for you to play under.
Take note that this game is about a decade old and had hundred of thousand of people go through it and registering almost any name imaginable (and of course, many people hog more than just one name, more like dozens).
Profile name - how this specific profile will be listed in your profile list (will appear in the left section of the window).
Player name - the name you'll appear under in the game, your user handle.
Password - duh....
Ship - the ship you'll start in automatically when you enter any zone, I suggest you set it to spectate.
Resolution - set to the max your monitor can take.
Refresh - leave at default
Window - full screen
Zones - you can choose a zone for the client to auto-select when you run the game (so you just need to press "play" or "enter" after you run the game to enter your prefered zone to play at) or you can leave it empty for no preference.
Macros - you'll learn
Key defs - you can create mini-profiles of key definitions (some zones supposedly might be better suited with another set of keys than others, blah says I).
Target - target bounty : in the game, enemies equal or above this will show as brighter dots in your radar, others will be darker (so you can more easily spot the "big fat fishes" to go after).
Chats - chat channels you want to auto join upon entry to the zone (you may have upto 9, IE "subspace, game, food club, fighttodeath, etc.")
Auto - other commands to automatically perform upon entry (such as joining a squad? whatever fits you).
Click "Ok" when done.

5. Select the zone you want to play by left clicking on it or by scrolling with the arrow keys and press enter of the "play" button to get in.

6. If you did #5, your life just got tougher, good luck. I still say you should've gone and played wow, way easier game.

7. You'll be prompted with a window questioning if to create a new user, say yes and fill in the details.
You don't have to put in real details, but the email specified will be used if you go bother the network operators for a password incase you somehow screwed up and wiped it from the profile (or the profile itself) and forgot what it was and need a new one).
