I have a decent computer with DSL as my internet so I was wondering if there was a way to know if I could host other zones or something like that. Also if I were to be a "reliable" host would I be able to make my server named like SSI or something like that?

You can host zones on a 56k for all it matters....I do suggest you put the zones on a seperate server OTHER then your main computer...

You cannot use SSI, nor can you use any name that is currently up there. Try to come up with a unique hosting name. Usually the names are 3-4 letters long.

Also, if you have a router, you will need to be able to port forward...so make sure you know the router password before you start doing anything.

I was generalizing with SSI. So literally it doesnt matter just as long as you have access to hosting? Alright then. I can probably host a few zones then.

Moved the topic as this fits more in "General Questions" than zone hosting.

Also, what is your upload speed? When it comes to hosting zones the upload is what matters. Sure, you can host some zones but once they get 5 - 10 players they'll probably start lagging hardcore.

I'm not really sure of my upload speed. Is there a site I can figure out what my upload speed is?

After that, note rule #1: Don't let confess help you, he'll only take control of your zone, then claim it as his, and put it in his AOG thingy.

You need to have a very decent upload, like 1-2mbit at least.
And a good PC that won't crack and break down which means a stable OS and decent memory and a CPU that can clock it because subgame was made kinda like continuum to hog CPU and if it skip a thread it spikes and that's bad for players.

Also, give me billing op.
so I can keep ssc scum away and ban faggot teens...

I'd say more than 1-2mbit. Not even an average T1 line can handle 10+ players without lagging. I run my server on a 10-12mbps line (varies) and I get a 120ms ping when there's 50 or so people allocated altogether.

This server is on a 100 mbps line. He doesn't need to have this line connected to his house to host servers from it. Just the same, this server can technically send at 100 mbps constantly, but uses bucket sharing with other hosts in the same complex, so it won't always be the peak, though I've never come across, even when running test ASSS servers, that it really peaked out at anything below 15 mbps.

Now, on the other hand, when that Senator's account starts to get flooded with spam, the CPU becomes a huge bottle neck, because god knows that spamd needs to run at a very high priority.

The servers RAM is still being crapped on, though. I think I would move my website to this server if it wasn't. icon_sad.gif

I can always ask my ISP to boost my bandwidth and speed...

The upload on my connection is about 250 kbps. When I was hosting, I had like 4-8 people in a zone, and the ping was around 150ms.

I'll be moving to georgia soon, so I might get a better connection there.

ok i'm not sure if this is weird or not i've done two upload tests that one was 85kbps and then the one i did yesterday was 36kbps so i'm not sure if either is my true speed or if i'm lagging so bad it lowers it.
