Post subject: Hosting suggestions
Recently, an internet friend of mine who offered to host my site has fallen through and basicly told me -- in nicer words -- 'go to hell', despite the fact I was going to pay him.

This leaves me in an awkward situation. I need hosting, and badly. I know theres a few of you out there who have your own webhosts and what not, so Im looking to you guys for advice:

I need a web host with the following:
-Storage: 500MiB
-Bandwidth: 10 Mibit/s pipe, 5 GiB transfer
-OS: Linux (Fedora or Redhat) or FreeBSD.
-Full shell access
-Control Panel (Cpanel prefered, anything acceptable)

Extras (Convenient, but with full shell, not necessary)
-mySQL
-PHP5

I dont care if its a virtual or dedicated server, so long as I have full shell so I can install Java and anything else I need (and they dont suck for resource distribution).

Thats about it. Higher specs are better, but I dont want to spend a whole lot of cash on this. Post any links you find.

Thanks
-C

Chambahs: Whos altec?

Grav: Wow... theyve got great prices on their reseller packages, but lack 1 key thing: Shell access. I even gave them a call to see if theyd install java on the machine for my accounts, and I was told I had to do get a dedicated server. And at 175/mo, I have to pass.

Silly, reseller is for pretending to be a webhost company and selling others hosting, you don't need that, unless you want to be like DoCk> and open your own hosting buissness.

Anyway, they also provide web-hosting on shared a server space where you can have shell access, pending on the following:
Quote:

SSH/Shell Access

For security reasons, shell access is not enabled by default. In order to activate shell access on your account, you will need to fax or mail a copy of your driver's license, passport or other photo id to customer service.

Your session wll be logged. Any attempt to copy/delete/view files not belonging to you, will result to your hosting account being terminated!

The shell access opens a js window and you can pretty much fuck around, and get banned if you cross the line, haha.

Actually, I never checked them for java support.
Who uses java?
They support just about anything else.
cgi, php, perl, jelsoft asp...

Altec007 apparently is running some hosting something or another.
He used to be this EG newb, now he got BanG sysop access or something.

TWSites offers shell access, and its fairly inexpensive. Plus the money goes back into the subspace community.

Aside from if you know some dedicated server owners, you can get dedicated servers for 99/m, or cheaper. Infact, you can get some for 30/m (but they are the suckiest thing ever!).

I reccomend http://servermatrix.com if you need a good, cheap dedicated server. If you want cheaper and better, contact me, im sure i can help!

Super Celeron 2.4

- 2.4GHz Celeron
- 80GB Drive
- 1024MB RAM
- 1200GB Bandwidth
- Private VLAN
- Red Hat, FreeBSD, Windows
- Orbitâ„¢ Customer Portal

- $119 Monthly / $99 Setup
- $129 Monthly / $49 Setup
- $139 Monthly / $0 Setup

This is the cheapest servermatrix has. Good luck!

Well the thing is, Im trying to stay away from SS hosting unless it ends up being the only option. While I will be running a number of bots on the server, I dont want to take the risk of having my server associated with any ss politics or internet-favors and such. Its how I ended up in this situation in the first place. Though, I am content with the server space Shanky/MGB provide me, I just need something with more functionality.

Confess, Yeah, Its starting to look that I need either a high end VPS, or a low end dedicated server. Problem is, both of them are in the 100/mo range, which is more than Im willing to spend on my personal site.

Actually, TWSites has totally migrated away anything it had to do with SS, ever. You can't find anything (except the name, which is pretty vague) anywhere that says it was once related.

However, I do have bad news about TWSites. I've had a problem with my cgiemail thing forever on there, and I created a "support ticket" on their wonderfully hokey support system. "Harvey" who basically seems to run the place said to give him a link, so I tried posting links, but you can't post '/' characters in followups or something so it took like 10 tries for me to actually get a link posted (had to do HTML escape in the end) and eventually my ticket got closed with no followup? Bleh. When I get off my butt, I'm going to find a better host.

Hmm, nice confess.
Aside celeron sucking goats, nice.

But I looked inside, and it's a clean boot.
You have to install everything from SQL to a fucking cpanel.
Cheapos want more money PER MONTH for fucking anything but the OS.
So, if you're too lazy/clueless to do the installations of all you need for it to be a proper server, you can easily end up paying upto $200/month for just the basic shit.

So, I dunno...

Otherwise, yeah it sounds nice getting 1.2k GB/month transfer + 80 GB HD with 1024 RAM dedicated server for 100/month, on the surface.

I've been giving free webhosting out for a while now. I just don't go around spamming it. But, I don't give shell access. That's for people who like risks. I may live in Las Vegas, but I don't gamble.

How much money are you willing to pay for hosting cerium?

anyways, servermatrix is actually just theplanet.com, which is why the servers are really nice, have very good uptime/etc. The Planet basically just created a second website to help sell the servers, instead of just lowing the prices on there own. (Although im sure there is some difference somewhere)

Yes, there is a big difference. You just don't see it in everyday occurences.

Its the same datacenter, but whats the difference?
1stStrike - Fri Jul 29, 2005 12:22 am

ServerMatrix has worse support, lower quality servers and not too long ago all of their backups failed and half of servermatrix was without power for several hours.

They put less money into servermatrix thus you get what you pay for. Their new datacenter is also full of problems.

Which is why real dedicated or semi-dedicated servers cost as much as they do.

Im willing to pay 50/mo max. Its a personal site for my development projects, nothing more. Id like to pay less, but thats not going to happen unless I manage to find someone who works in the business.

About TWSites... I emailed Harvey about it, and he pretty much shot down any chance he had with me going with them:

Quote:

> -What OS do you use (I assume some flavor of linux based on some
> features)?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

> -What control panel, if any is included with accounts?

Latest version of cPanel, and Web Host Manager for resellers

> -What type of hosting packages are the packages on the hosting.php
> page (shared, vps, etc)?

Shared

> -What resource sharing/allocation sofware do you use?

cPanel

> -What are the guaranteed resources per account?

Exactly as listed

> -Does the shell access allow users to install programs (Such as java,
> or upgrade php)?

No, this is the job of the systems administrator, namely myself. You
aren't allowed to run any daemons (software that runs continuously).

--Harvey

Couple things bother me about his answers:
1) Shared hosting is called shared for a reason: youre sharing the box with others. Meaning your resources are shared with others. Kinda hard to say the listed machines resources are what ill be getting on a shared box.

2) With cpanels ability to setup cron jobs for you, shell access is rather pointless in the capacity he is offering it. You cant install/upgrade software, and you cant run anything long term.
Im sure there are small uses for it, but it generally seems meaningless.

Oh well... thats out.
Have you guys heard anything good or bad about rackforce? Im considering going with their dds300 VPS server:

Correct me if im wrong, but that seems more like just regular old hosting, not a dedicated server, plus, it is not 10mbps, but 1.5. Depending on how many servers they have...you might lag pretty badly..

Maybe look at -
http://www.helphousehosting.com/plans/
- or -
http://helphousehosting.com/reseller.htm

(Im not sure if this is what you're looking for or not)
As far as a dedicated server, contact me I say. I might be able to get you a pretty good one.
Cerium - Fri Jul 29, 2005 6:40 pm
Post subject:
1.5 bidirectional is. You can upgrade your server to a 10mbit for an extra 210/mo, which is more than I need and willing to spend.

The helphousehosting site looks like theyre a reseller themself. No machine specs listed, and almost a template website look. Plus, resller hosting plays wont work, since I need shell access capible of installing and running software.

List off some specs, prices and other info. Like I said before, if its run/maintained or directly influenced by someone from subspace (or someone younger than me), its out. I refuse to deal with anyones personal politics.

Good host for cheap are not only hard to find, it's a rare animal.

http://www.javaservlethosting.com/services.php?pageid=webhostingcomparison - supports java and shell, low prices, seems sort of too good for the cheap price, requires further investigation.

http://www.aldenhosting.com/plans_overview.shtml - these guys got SSH shell and java support, $40~$50. Might suit you best?

http://web-hosting-report.com/compare.htm - You get shell access with their diamond plan at $37/month, almost no HD space (150) and costs shitload for each MB "upgrade" or for bandwidth and anything else, (bandwidth 12 GB btw), says nothing about java support (they offer java chat, so I assume it support java?).

http://www.webcomindia.net/linuxhosting.html - These guys price their servers by the YEAR, not month (unless I misread price/Yr) though it seem confusing and fishy, seem to support java and shell access, I dunno...

http://www.refdev.com/hosting/Unix_Hosting/ - Seems decent HD/bandwidth plans, and they mention shell access on most of their account options too.

http://www.dotservant.com/webhosting/compareplans.shtml - supposedly supports shell, need to contact and ask directly.

I'm tired.

I only pay $10 a month for 2gig space (shared over all the shanky.com parts too), 100 gb transfer, and all the other good stuff unlimited (SQL/email/etc), plus SSH. Only said part is that its still a shared co-host, which is why for that while, the sit was sucking (damn that Senator).

Course, our deal is sort of a friend-knows-a-friend type, so I think it worked out pretty well.
