Very sad news.. hopefully this won't be as bad as VIE dropping its hosting..

I sense a disturbance in the force.

Subspace will not be part of this subset.
You can remove the "/moveing" from your title.

So, the official opening of the new SSN network could not have come at a better time. First, a good SSC host, SSCW, chokes and dies. Then, the largest host that exists currently is dieing. And the primary biller is being relocated. Id say altec. and gsj! had excellent timeing.

Well, some of the zones will be relocated over to different hosting as they have said. But hopefully with the future release of linux server, we should end up with much more reliable hosting, since everyone knows that [rant]micro$oft is evil, and linux will fix anything[/rant].

You know, some people are just kind, and host things for others to use without any chance of getting any money back. No ads, no fees, just kind people.

*ahem*

i didn't and don't want to disparage sonera for what they've done. but all along i kinda guessed that it wouldn't hold water with their accounting. i just don't see the hosting of subspace as something they got together about and agreed to support for free and with no real benefits to their own company. it always seemed to me, and maybe i'm wrong here, that somehow it was wiggled by at least some of them by someone looking out for our gaming interests. how would anyone justify hosting that to a real acounting board, especially in the third year of little or no economic growth.

These are Finns.

We all know that Baudchaser and what's-his-name originally just slipped 'em some beers, and they had a jolly good laugh, stroked their 1337 beards, brought up a laggy server, and before you know it, it became the billing server!

now what do we all think about limited click-banners? you can get what, 4 cents a click right? or having some sort of advertising method we could sell? i saw on tw.org that server hosting just for them is $1000 a month (!). they are taking donations, but come on, they will never get $1000 every single month like this. other, smaller zones are worse and better off, i'm sure, based on their hosting needs and the dedication of their players. it seems like all of the former sscu is in a bad way, and ssc as well. is there some way we could make an adspace and have the larger zones support themselves on its revenue? anyone else's thoughts?

ADDENDUM: also, with the *nix server coming out hopefully we can find some good hosts. but if not, what then?

You actually like clicking ads? What a waste of time..
Ad companies are clever enough not to pay-per-click but only give comission on sales/new clients.

lol. no, i don't like clicking ads, but it would be better than not having subspace hosted anymore now wouldn't it? for now, priitk is paying all that he has to to keep tw alive. what about other zones that are run by young guys with no money? what about when his funds run out? you think there are a lot of millionaires in estonia? there has to be a way to pay for it somehow, right?

or maybe we could just get some more bandwidth-rich Finns drunk and get them to host.

i'm honestly trying to think about the long-term effects of not having free hosting any more. the best thing, of course, would be to find someone else to host for free. is there a way we could just get a 100 (or even 10 would work, wouldn't it?) mbit line and provide our own box? i'd think that'd be a lot cheaper than renting a dedicated server.

It's best to piggyback on some major coorp that doesnt use up all its bandwith.

i'd think most major corporations would want something in return...

the question is, what can we give them? and who wants it badly enough to bother with hosting us?

I wouldn't mind seeing adverts ingame. But I find it hard to see how that would make money or provide an incentive for companies to host, as billboards don't do much for me.
