Trash Talk - ...wtf? Cerium - Wed Jun 22, 2005 6:10 am Post subject: ...wtf?
So I went to clear out my spam folder today, and noticed something:
http://hybrid.shanky.com/wtf.png
Out of all the spam I receive, only 10% of it is in english.
So, what the hell? I dont visit any sites that use these languages, mostly because I can only speak/read one language, and even that depends on how intoxicated I am.
Aside from web crawling bots, and spam companies selling lists of names, how do I get my email on these foreign spam lists?
And secondly, wouldnt it make sense for them to spam me in a language I can understand? Clearly if they got my email off a site thats 100% english, wouldnt it be fairly clear that I speak english?
Bah.

maybe your name means something in that language and its quite obvious its being spammed. Maybe Cerium means something like "postmaster" or something like that.

I like the "^ ^*" appended to the subject lines. Probably translates to "Hey, you wanna come sleep with me because I'm a 15 year old American slut who watches anime and thinks she's fitting in with the Japanese stereotype?", thus making the "^ ^*" a requirement.

Well, Cerium is an element, mostly used for manufacturing glass.

The worst part about this is: Im pretty sure most of them are trying to explain my inability to please my significant other without their penial enhancement.
How do they all know?!

Sometimes people can get ahold of your e-mail address, and sign you up for a whole bunch of crap. It's happened to me before.
Purge - Wed Jun 22, 2005 4:41 pm Post subject:
Yeah, but Gmail does a good job filtering out the spam.

GMail is the best e-mail service I have ever come across.

The main pages of Shanky.com and its sub-domains are under close watch of crawlers.
You'll be suprised at the amount of spam I got from Mine Go Boom and myself (nothing like being spammed by your own mail address) even.
It was since then that I started posting news with a faux email.

Every public site is. And yes, news@minegoboom.com is still heavily spammed against.

Except that has some insane limitations like it doesn't allow .zip attachments. (or at least didn't while I still used it).
Purge - Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:40 pm Post subject:
It permits .zip, but you can't have an EXE or DLL or any other executable file in there. If you want to send those, you'll have to RAR it up.

C:\>rename filename.exe filename.run
Then zip it.

I use file.zip.doc
You can really use any extension you want that doesn't use ASCII to send (ie .txt)
