ASSS Questions - Cryptography under chatnet? Solo Ace - Wed Jun 01, 2005 11:57 am Post subject: Cryptography under chatnet?
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, but I thought this would be the best place for it.
A while ago I just thought about adding a little more security to (well, actually under) the chatnet protocol.
I do realize the "simple chat protocol" is supposed to remain simple, but actually in this idea it will still be simple.
How great would it be to put a protocol like SSH2 under the chatnet protocol?
The underlaying protocol, SSH2, would provide the encryption, while the software uses the chatnet protocol to communicate with plain text.
A module would just be able to act like some SSHd, then pass it to the chatnet module.
Just an idea, nothing serious here. i88gerbils - Wed Jun 01, 2005 12:50 pm Post subject:
Kind of like a tunnel?

Any idea how annoying it would be to have people talking encrypted?

About as annoying when I talk in Japanese in Y!PP when nobody has the right unicode settings to display it. :d

Yeah, funny!
Know what's funny? How my summer holidays started today. Let's see if you can laugh now huh?!
Anyways, would it really be a bad idea?

I've been off for a month now and yet.. I have yet to accomplish anything. :sigh:

I don't see what's so annoying about encrypting the connection to the server. It at least provides some protection to your password.
CypherJF - Wed Jun 01, 2005 5:19 pm Post subject:
Now that I agree with that totally.

Brain's just kidding, I guess, since it's just bullshit.
Ah well, I guess nobody would do it anyway.
I do have enough time now to do stuff though, maybe I'll try it and ask for help here whenever I get stuck.

Admit it solo, you can't quit. It will be good to see more stuff developed for the game.
Solo Ace - Wed Jun 01, 2005 6:18 pm Post subject:
I can quit, if I'd want to, the problem is that I don't want to because there's so much to learn.
Before I'd get back to the game I want to have some other projects finished though (I really have to get my Linux box "ready to use", I still want to have some local websites running on it, and I still want to write my own Socks4 Proxy, and I finally have enough time to do it!). You're looking for stunnel.
Solo Ace - Thu Jun 02, 2005 7:35 am Post subject:
It'd be a tunnel or underlaying layer, yeah.
I've been thinking of looking for something like stunnel, just didn't have any use for it yet.
Stunnel would give some problems for chatnet, though.
Every server and every client both need to run an instance of stunnel, which makes it harder for both to actually use it.

Fine, obviously nobody got the hint in the last paragraph of my last post, so I'll put it like this.
Can't some module for it be integrated into the official ASSS releases?
