Post subject: Thanks for Windows build
Just wanted to post and say thanks for the Windows build.. I never could get subgame2 working right, but asss seems to work out of the box! (I don't even have MySQL or a biller (that I know of) running and it seems to be just fine.... If i'm just hosting a zone on my little intranet for occasional play, do I need either?

What happened when you tried subgame?

I don't think you'll need MySQL (which would only be for an alias database) and you probably don't need a biller either, if it's only on your LAN.

You could've asked for help here with Subgame, heh.

I did as rgoodwin in the other forum icon_smile.gif Basically massive packet loss/delay even when running biller/subgame/Continuum 0.38 (or even 0.39)
------------------
So I snagged the server binaries and followed the instructions at Shanky.com/server to get my own zone running behind our firewall. My bro-in-law was over and we wanted some 1:1 versus joining a public zone.

Problem is, either/both of us kept getting knocked off the server saying that there was too much delay. I was running the subgame2, subbill, and continuum 0.38 (also tried 0.39) on one PC (IP addr 192.168.0.3) and he was running C 0.38 on the other PC (IP addr 192.168.0.4).

Even if I tried to play just by myself in the zone, I would get kicked out after a few seconds with an error about packet loss/delay between server/client.

Can you run all the components on one PC like that? Any special configuration bits I might need to do if so? It all worked well enough that the two server bits were communicating fine it seemed. I tried tinkering with delay timeouts, etc, but that just let us stay in a LITTLE longer.

We were both on 54g wireless connections on the router, so surely latency shouldn't have been an issue either.

Thanks in advance for help!!!

edit: here is a snippit from subgame2.exe when I am playing by myself on the machine.

As an aside, is there a good tutorial for asss (or subgame that carries over) that talks about bringing in different types of zones? Like I think I've seen Capture the Flag and other types of zones but I don't know how you manage them. I assume you get some files and put them into the arenas directory and then some .conf magic? (Sorry if I'm mixing terms here!!!).

Well I answered in your other post.

It's generally not a good idea to post your problem in two different topics, as that just confuses people like me. icon_razz.gif

Cyan,

Didn't mean to, was just posting it as a reference in case these friendly forum folks didn't want to go clicking over there icon_smile.gif

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear you got it all working.

Mysql is completely optional, and actually pretty useless for a small zone. The only thing it's good for is an alias database, unless you write your own modules that use it.

A biller is also optional. You can even get real password security without one (load the auth_file module and type ?help passwd).
