Go download some distro, read the handbook while installing it (or, if you take some really newb-friendly distro, just install it), done?

MichaelG: maybe because it attempts to doubly open the file
MichaelG: it does return some kind of file pointer
It actually is a problem there, if I replace the call with a normal gzopen to a new(or identical filename for that matter) it proceeds just fine.
But whether that helps solving it?
