Trash Talk - The best turf zone is....

Post subject: The best turf zone is....
I could not figure out where to put this so I decided to place it here.

I want to know what people think of turf zones. Whats your favorite if any at all? What kind of settings/map design do you like the most? What do you hate most about turf zones?

In general the only popular turf zone I know of is Trench Wars. I plan on making a turf zone but I have a feeling no matter how good it is people still wont go. So here I am getting opinions first.

Sweet.

They're like flagging, warzone, chaos and ctf zones, only not.

Hrmmm. Come to think of it I've never really enjoyed a turf zone (except Turf Arizona, but I'm biased because I worked there) - it does seem to me, though, that a really well done turf zone has yet to be made. sa_tongue.gif
jack et wrote:

I guess I won't give you a 'how to make a map 101', because that'd take like the rest of, hrmmm, well some old guy's life, but, I will say it should look professional (I know, duh, but seriously - if it looks worse than the zones with hundreds of daily players, it probably won't do so well). Don't make the map too big. Don't make it too small. Don't focus too much on one thing...that includes colors. For instance, 17th Parallel's entire tileset is now blue, and it drives me nuts.

As for settings. Super settings = no fekkin' way. SVS is good and I will always love it, but you should probably make things a little faster if you want to be successful these days (and personally, when I've created zones, this is what I've aimed for because, duh, it's what I like). Some examples of decent-speed sets imo: 17th Parallel, DSB (from what I remember), SWR (mostly...from what I remember), SWZ.

Well if you're including TW as a turf zone...I'd say I hate that the settings suck (read: they're really stupid and newbish and boring) and that I wouldn't even call something with one damn flag a turf zone.

As for DSB (the only other turf zone I can really think of [of note, I s'pose]), I must say I think I dislike DSB even more than TW because it's an absolutely unwinnable game. In TW you can be clearly winning; you can own that one stupid flag absolutely. In DSB it's really tedious and unlikely you'll ever absolutely without question be 'winning' (Ya, ya, I'm sure you can and it happens occasionally, but whatever).

Like I said I never really thought of TW as turf, but...
If it's good, it's good, it almost doesn't even matter what the gametype is. It just has to have fun, competitive settings (for those that can tell, please sa_tongue.gif) and be rather unique with a good atmosphere. Competition truly is important, I think. It's often helpful when those first people that are the best come around and give the newbies a challenge; a goal.
So: unique, competitive, not (too) like an existing zone [shouldn't be too damn hard since I can only think of 1.5 turf's myself atm], and you've got to be cool. If you act like a newbie when you promote it, that's what many people will think of your zone. Now the newbies might go, but not after the elitists say "you're a newb" everywhere.

I still have an itching for my own personal Mini-Turfin' settings I made a long, long time ago. I make it only because of the kickass map Gigakiller made back in 1998. If you want to play around with it, feel free. I've only once gotten it tested with more than 6 people at a time, but sadly, most of the people only wanted to kill in the center, which was pretty damn fun, but defeats the purpose of a turfing zone. So in other words, still needs the ships balanced.

Code: Show/Hide
Turfin' zone.
By Mine GO BOOM

Ships
------------------

Warbird:    Good fighter. Good for attacking bases.

Javelin:    Fastest, second best fighter. Good on attacking.

Spider:     Cloaker, great guns, needs lots of greens to fill up.

Leviathan:  Bomber, can lay mines. Best for Defence.
Can attach to this ship (1 max at a time).

Terrier:    Another good gunner, but also needs lots of greens.

Weasel:     EMPs. Stop people for a while, but little damage.
Great in big battles for stopping gunners.

Lancaster:  2 bomb bouncies. Great in attacking bases with lots
of levis, just give it prox.

Shark:      Cloaking defender. This is the anchor for any good base.
Can attach to it, and has many burst to kill a large force.
Any good base will have one of these. Keep a greener going
            for this baby.

Warning. Long winded hypethetical zone rant.

Now we are getting somewhere. Tell me what you think of this. I will try to keep it short.

I have not yet looked at MGB's zone yet but I am very thankful you being so helpful by bringing an example to the disscussion as am I thankful to everyone else.

The map:
First of all it has a decent chunk of the flags near center so people who fight in the center have something to fight over and so you can always have a couple flags at least. On the top(not too far from center) is a massive base with almost 100 flags in it to encourage team basing. Spread along the edges of the map will be the other 100 flags.

I could copy MGB's zone but I have a feeling it would not take off. Zones with flags spread like that involve flying around aimlessly. Couple this with a small population to start and people will bore quickly when they have a hard time getting a decent amount of flags or finding anyone to fight.

I completely agree with you SuSE on the tileset. I am happy to tell you that my tileset has several different colored tiles in different styles. I always felt that Redstar, while neat to look at, has repetetive bases.

Also, while similar to DSB where you can't completely win, the 100+ flagged base on the top of the map is a good chunk of the flags so you can feel like your winning by having taken it. icon_smile.gif

Settings:
For those of you who dislike super/one hit kill zones then my settings might appeal to you.
Closer to Redstar then any other zone, but not quite. Bombs take about 70% of life from smaller ships and half from bigger ships. So you will need some skill to kill people. Ships are fast (but not super settings extreme) since the zone is large.
I'm doing something a little different for greening. Ships stats start at 90% and it takes 3-5 greens to max a stat. That way a greened ship has an advantage but not an extreme advantage like in SVS.
Ships will be unique but not like Trench Wars which SuSE also mentioned a dislike for.

As for the good luck on getting opinions, you've already done more than enough to help me. icon_smile.gif
And then more people said stuff. Which is also good.

Hey Bak, could you tell me what you specifically like about DSB? I'm aiming for details more than general ideas at this point.

I played the map for a bit. The zone I am thinking of is far more fast paced than yours. More like EG or Redstar as said before but no 1 hit kills. I still stick by my earlier opinion, not enough reason to leave center. Just a couple flags here and there.

I might steal your shark though. biggrin.gif
I was thinking of having a slow high energy anchoring ship for any group of people serious enough to need it. I also like its 10 burst, 255 ports, and 6 repels.

Yeah, thats what sort of happened when I threw this into a Saturday Night Slayfest (well before your time, back during VIE days). I went from only having a few people flying around to around 70, and only a few people actually put effort into turfing.

Of course, that was before the time of where you start when you warp, bots, etc, so I could make an attempt to revive it.

Feel free to use any of the ideas I had. Unlike some zones, I don't try copyrighting my works.

I've hosted turf before. The turf radar you see on Catid's site was something I thought up and had Catid do (the dragon radar in dbz had just come out and I got my idea from that. So, it wasn't 100% original. But still, pretty cool and the only really cool turf plugin IMO.)

If some one can actually make a decent revival of turf or a zone following that idea I'd be willing to host it. I've always been a fan of turf arizona, so any really good turf zone interests me as a host.

I read the description of the turf plugin. Very neat sounding indeed. Does anyone know where I can see a screenshot of it working.

On a different note, my zone got deleted. I use a family computer and one member decided to delete that game since they knew I liked it.
Now, some advice for the future. When you create a back up for your zone, stick it somewhere safe and not in the Continuum folder. icon_smile.gif

So getting this zone running is going to take even more time.

Thank you 1stStrike. Knowing that someone would be willing to host the zone(provided it is actually good) is a good moral booster when your back to step one.

No one else has any opinions? Well I have a few more questions anyways.

Since there are so many bots/plugins, which ones, other than the turfing one previously mentioned, do you thnik would work well in a turf zone. Also, how does everyone feel about some of these bots I keep seeing in all these new zones that allow you to buy things. Seems excessive to me, but I came to get other opinions as well.

Hmm lots of talk going on but my favorite turf game was the original Counter Strike, becuase of a small POP they decided to close it, OrangeeoZ decided to remake the original and they are almost the same but with minor changes. If u like a good turf zone with different graphics and a good playing style then check out the new zone SSZ Counter Strike. Its very fun and addictive becuase it doesnt have your normal ranking system. There are Terrorist and Counter Terrorist and by capturing the other teams flag and killing enemies u recieve creds. These creds give u upgrades and new weapons and abilites that help you out in the feild. Very fun check it out. (Its not the original but its dang fun)

I don't like those fake jackpot bots that use *points to reset your rating and average kill points.

And that map by gk, it is more fun to spawn mine the center than being chased around the map. I guess you could give credits for each 'unique' flag tagged (don't want two players sitting on the corner of a flag getting easy money).

Er, I dont have the game on the family computer so there is no way for me to even try the example. C'mon man. Just take a quick picture and post it here. Please?

Hopefully I will have my new computer soon so I can look at Counter Strike.

CTF zones aren't turf. This includes counter strike, metal gear and halo. So, counter strike doesn't belong in this thread Game Warden. Unless sometime in the last 5 months they changed the zone to turf. I think that's the last time I bothered going to that worthless zone.

5mb? I think thats just the size of the installer. Besides, I am not trying to incur the rath of the owner of the computer again. I still have stuff I need to back up.

No more opinions? Any random though on turf in general, not just on previous turf zones would be appreciated.
