Post subject: Sysop/SMOD/MOD Validation
I know that if a mod logs in with the MOD password appended to his password separated by an *, he will get MOD powers. I also know there is a list that the server can check with to validate the correct MODs are logged in. How do I set the validation??

CheckMod=1
CheckSMod=1
CheckSysop=1

or

CheckMod=0
CheckSMod=0
CheckSysop=0

Now... can someone who is NOT on a Sysop/SMOD/MOD list still use the password to log in and get certain powers???

The check just makes it so that a player who is already on sysop.txt or whatever has to use the pass to log in.

If you dont have the pass you just need to be on the list.

Players who know teh pass cannot get that power since they're not on the list.

Actually with mod, you don't need the password if you're on the list.

Can someone confirm this; if all the validation files are empty; but you have validations on; a person is still able to get "powers" if they know the password. :/

if all validations are on (=1) and there is nobody on any of the .txt's, no one can use any powers - sysop, smod, mod, none of them

there are still some things you can do if you know the password, however - like see private arenas or be on staff chat (if you know what it is)

this is because validation does not GIVE powers, it merely DENIES the execution of most commands for people that are not on the txt's

short version: passwords give powers, validation restricts powers

This is not correct. I have seen for myself, with the sysop.txt devoid of any names, someone logging in to a zone using the sysop password and *recycle(ing) the zone. A glitch perhaps?

Was sysop validation on then? icon_razz.gif

To L. Chance's question, yes, sysop/smod/mod validations were on. (I believe, 99.9%)

you believe?

Yes, all validations were enabled. The tests that ALTEC . and I performed on one of our zones revealed the following:

sysop.txt devoid of all names = anyone who logged in using the sysop password could *recycle the zone.

one name added to sysop.txt = only that one person could use *recycle.

We did not test to see what commands were available during test condition one above and which commands were not. However, if memory serves, *log was also available when no names were in the sysop.txt.

LMAO! Do you need 50 people to tell you something is so to make it so?

2 < 50

Anyway, confirmed.

Like Cyan said, I was just looking for a second confirmation. You are one person afaik, L. Chance.

I'm guessing this a non-issue in ASSS? So there's probably no point in bothering PriitK to hack up subgame some more over it.

Actually, the more I think of this, the more I think of it as a feature.

What if you had no access to the server directory other than *putfile, and you accidentally uploaded a blank sysop.txt. Then your host would have to fix it.

I doubt Priit would try to do anything about it anyways..

I guess that depends. Can a sysop do anything, or just *recycle? ...because *recycle alone doesn't do much tongue.gif

...what? If you can do nothing but *recycle, I don't see how it could possibly be a feature, as it'd be a useless one (recycling isn't going to get you on sysop.txt).

If you can do more than *recycle, then maybe you're right.

I'm saying that if you are the owner/a sysop in a zone, you have no access to the server other than *putfile, and you upload a blank sysop.txt, you're screwed. I don't see what *recycle has to do with it...
