General Questions - Flags Siaon - Mon Apr 26, 2004 7:14 am Post subject: Flags
I'm not sure about this, but it seems that flag information is simply distributed amongst all clients, which in my humble opinion is an extremely bad thing, flags should be treated like all other objects and not be distributed amongst players that are not relatively close to it, because this effectively allows people to make their own little flag coord command.

Yes, flag information is sent to everyone at all times. Thus there is no 'lag' when you get near flags, as your client already knows its there. The only way people could make a cheat to find this flag information is to make a proxy and decrypt the encryption (currently not done by anyone) or read the memory information from the client (currently not done), but shouldn't be too difficult, compared to breaking the encryption. But then again, the time spent to do that, you might as well just spec the arena and find the flag.

Yeah, and flag structs don't contain nearly as much info as player structs, so it's definitely not a bandwidth concern.

How can you save bandwidth by only sending flag data when near the flag? Everytime you get near the flag the server will resend the data, pointless.
When you talk about player structs I assume you mean position packets, as player info (such as squad) is only sent upon entering an arena.
Also most zones have it so you can't see flags from spec.

People could also make a cheat to decloak enemies. Information hacks are always a problem in an online game, but flag coords are not high on the reward vs effort list.
