Trash Talk - New Hard Drive Anonymous - Sat Feb 07, 2004 5:07 pm Post subject: New Hard Drive
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a hard drive, because I definitely need more space.
I was thinking either an 80 Gig from Hitachi (~$70) or possibly a 120 Gig from Hitachi (~$100). The specs for both are awesome, some of the best I could find for a hard drive of that size.
I also need to know which Linux distro is better: Mandrake or Slackware. I've been arguing with myself over which is better... I used to own a copy of Mandrake (actually, my dad did) back when I was like 6... I loved it, and it's the only distro I've ever used.
Post suggestions.

Slack is for the more advanced users. Mandrake is good for look in feel, a plus for those just coming off windows.
Slackware doesnt hold your hand the way the other flavors may.

I was reading up on a few, they say Mandrake is the easiest, Slackware is more customizeable, etc.
I would probobly go with Mandrake for a bit, then migrate to Slackware.

Not to sound repetive or anything, but Gentoo is the best linux distro.
Linux from scratch (LFS) would be the best if it were a distro, but it's not.
I've never used slackware, but my experience with Mandrake has been that its easy to get a desktop system to %90 of completion for %10 percent of the effort, but the last 10% will take 90% of the effort, if you know what I mean.
Gentoo and LFS are more 50-50.

Take a month off for your computer, and try out atleast 5 distos of your choice. Once you figure out how each works, or problems with each, your linux knowledge is increased enough to get you to know some basic things of value.
It also matters what you want to do with it. Gentoo is really good if you like tweaking your system, and living on the edge of technology. Mandrake, in my opinion, isn't really a Linux distro too much. Its sometimes actually hard to do advanced things in there, unless you know your command line commands really well.
Slackware is good too, as it does only what you need. But, with Gentoo the way it is now, Slackware isn't the best customizable thing anymore. But it will let you use your system within an hour, unless you have a really good CPU.
For hard drives: Maxtor, Western Digital, and Seagate are the top three. I'd go with WD, as their 120gig SE work great, but arn't the highest in space anymore. Seagate are much quieter, but more expensive, usually. Just visit sites such as Slickdeals once a day, and you can get hard drives of ranging sizes for less than $0.50 a gig. Sometimes without rebates even.
