There is a god. X10, the worst pop-up/under advertiser of them all, finally went under.

The filing came one day before the company faced a hearing in Orange County Superior Court for punitive damages following its loss to a tiny ad start-up called Advertisement Banners.com, based in Anaheim, Calif. That company had alleged that X10 had stolen its method of serving pop-under ads, or ads that show up beneath a Web page and remain on the screen once the window is closed.

On Oct. 7, the jury in the case awarded Advertisement Banners $4.3 million in compensatory damages, according to court records. The judge issued a gag order Tuesday in the case that will last until the jury is dismissed.

...since when can you steal FUCKING CODE....???

this country and it's trademarking and copyrighting is just FUCKING INSANE

It's so totally FUCKED UP

not to mention that their ENTIRE COMPANY is for the SALE of fucking pop-under ads

from advertisementbanners.com wrote:
Advertisement Banners is a full service interactive agency that owns and operates the largest premium pop-under advertising network on the internet. Since the company?s inception in 1999, Advertisement Banners has closely studied and adjusted to the ever changing complexities of online advertising. In January of 2000, Advertisement Banners launched the SpecificPOP ad network. The SpecificPOP network specializes in the strategic placement of the internet?s highest performing ad unit, the pop-under.

translation: we're fucking assholes that study every fucking browser until we make sure you cannot avoid our fucking lame pop-unders that people with IQs over 1 don't EVER click on in the first place - that's right, this is all we do and if you happen to want be as fucking ridiculously LAME as us and figure out how to do what we do because you have half a fucking brain, you're going to end up paying us 4.3 million dollars

The USA likes to protect businesses, and some slick lawyers have gotten the upper hand on really old judges that have no idea what a computer is. Thus, patents and trademarks are accepted for software ideas. They are working in congress for laws both against and for this, but so far neither have shown well.

It may even be worse, as the European Union might end up, or may have already past, the strictest patent laws for computers. You could patent an idea that you don't ever use, as sue the hell out of people who were using it a year before you even patented it.

Thank goodness. All these stupid ads do is desensitize people anyway. Click X, X, X, X, X, X, continuously and eventually it becomes automatic. There should seriously be laws against obnoxious advertising. Small, unobtrusive, non-animated banner ads are the way to go. They don't annoy people, and if designed well, might even attract some customers.

About the patenting, the movement to open source has begun, and I really hope it continues. Greedy, ruthless companies have no right to control what we do with our computers. Plus, comany-made programming is almost always ineffecient and slow to come out with upgrades. In some cases (Windows), it's much more buggy than open-source. My father works for a software company, and spends about 4/5 of his time getting permission to fix others' code and dealing with other beaurocracy. I know it may sound a bit naive, but I really think its time for people to start working together and stop competing. Our current system is just unbelievably wasteful.

Lol OK I'm done ranting. icon_razz.gif

Wow Akai, pretty mad about this. icon_eek.gif

very few programmers make a living by making free software. When trying to propel an economy (intellectaul prosperity being at the best a very distant second priority) unpaid programming work is the ultimate waste...

"beauracracy is not an assault on progress, it is an impeding form of insurance that keeps any group from breaking critical mass. less efficient, yes. That is why we have safety valves on gas pipelines. It is often a measure of control, not abuse"

There's your mother's-milk-of-capitalism for the day

I completely disagree. Anyone who is interested at all in running a Subspace server cannot possibly agree with that. That's a truly selfish concept.
I realize my ideas could not work in our current society. Therefore, when I say, "I really think its time for people to start working together and stop competing", I'm not just talking about programming, I'm talking about everything. People, as a whole, need to be less selfish and relieve the pressure of competition.
I realize that open-source software is not a way to make a living, but the thing is most active and energetic programmers are pretty young, meaning they can get a lot done quickly when concentrating and, if in college, don't even need to spend all their life earning a living. Open-source does work as you can tell from MERVBot, ASSS, and (non-SS) GNU stuff.

And I don't know if many people would agree with your ideas on beurocracy. Have you ever worked for a company that has a million forms you need to fill out? As a volunteer, I worked for Moffit Cancer, and barely got any real work done because I had to fill out forms and distribute official notices to employees. It really was a complete waste of time.

That may be so, but are our lives about making money? I regard money as a necessity, not as a goal. My goal in life is to accomplish something worthwhile, and have fun along the way. This may be possible in a business, but it's a lot easier doing volunteer/unpaid work. Sure, I'll have a job, but I will never waste my life doing something I don't want to do just to get money.

Side note: It's pretty funny how Trash Talk posts seem to turn into intellectual discussions on the board. icon_razz.gif It's pretty sweet actually.

I accredit it to the fact that the people that frequent these boards actually care about learning, as shown by their helpfulness towards others. That, or they just like to rant about smart stuff.

I agree Cyan Fire, Capitalism should focus on the human aspect rather than just profit, right now people just care about earning more and more money instead of doing what they love.

They all want to be rich and live in a mansion full of dumb blondes, lots of expensive cars and all that, but what they don't realize is you can get the same happiness or get happiness is you work or do something you like. If Capitalism only focuses on people's needs, we wouldn't be wanting more and more money, because we will have enoughto to have a decent life (Not Rich, just enough to get by).

The purpose in life it's not money, it's something you like to do, for example, i want to work towards making tools that will make life easier.
