OK that's not a fast connection lol. To be a good host, you'll want something like T1. Cable is good only up to the point of about 20 users.

Your RAM shouldn't be that big of a problem, unless its a major-lvz/super zone. But CPU speed will. Depending on how many zones you want to run, you'll need something from about a 1.5gHz processor to a multiprocessor.

This computer should also probably be 'clean', as in no systray progs (or other leeches) running and probably dedicated (if you do stuff while a big game is running, both your stuff and the zone will lag).

What's good enough for Windows may not be good enough for multiple servers.

Hehe, but if you can get all this, then good luck! Without hosts, SS wouldn't be what it is! (alive?)

not that im dumb but.... wat is T1? i have i guess a pretty fast CPU, i have nothing like leeches, bugs, etc. and i might ony host like 1-2 zones. if i think i like it ill make me computer better fer hodting more zones biggrin.gif

T1 is a dedicated data line, very fast, from 1Mbit/s to 1.5Mbit/s. They're expensive icon_razz.gif

Well if you only wanna host 1-2, then your current comp is probably fine, as long as they don't get busy. Maybe you could be like a server holding ground where new zones can get popular before they move up to a 'big' server like SSI (not even considering SSC).

but how exactly do host a zone? wat do u have to tell ethem and give them so their zone is hosted from my computer? icon_confused.gif

Basically you run your own subbill, and then they send you: server.ini, CFGs, LVZs, and (optionally) staff check files.

Then just follow How To: Make a Second Zone to set up the multiple zones.

Make sure you back up biller files (user.dat, score.dat, squad.dat) often, preferably once a day. If you lose zone data, people aren't gonna like you icon_razz.gif

Post subject: Hello knightrider01
Sry to interject here but I've spoken with knightrider01 before... If I can recall you asked me how to make a zone? I don't believe that with your current machine zone hosting scene is a bright future for you. I believe that in your case, you want to simply own and run a zone yes? If that is so then host one on your computer and when you find that you have a steady population at your zone (peaking at 25+) then try your luck with asking to be hosted by SSI. The idea is to simply host a zone from your computer in order to learn about zones and then to gain a player population so that hosts like SSI will bother to return your email when you ask them for hosting icon_redface.gif

You might also want to set up FTP for the zone owners.
