I invented a new cool way to talk online! You just insert letter "i" into the beginning of the word. Priatty ciool eih? Now spread the word, so everyone can talk in Lit!

Thats it. I try to be polite on this forum.. I try to present a nice and polite sense of being for everyone to view. This image ends now. L337 was not a langauge created by hackers... =\ Despite popular belief, L337 was created by 12 year old script kiddies that still believe 'handles' are cool. A hacker, is not someone that crashes or 'smites' others machines for the pure lovelust of it. A hacker is one that searches computer systems for the 'quest of knowledge' to know the truth that is hidden by 'the man'. A hacker is one that helps others, in this persuit of knowledge. Crackers (the blackhat hacker) are ones that crack systems to find this knowledge. They find creditcard numbers etc. Script Kiddies, are the kids that download scripts, which half the time they don't know what the hell they are doing, and use them to make themselves seem cool in the 'underground culture' they think exists. =\ As Stated in tuxedo.com.. If you don't have enough pride to put your own name to something, or its illegal and you can't put your name to it.. It's nothing worth doing. You should never need a handle. I use Sercit because this is my name I play on Subspace, and there is a big line between hacking... Cracking.. Phreaking.. and being a Script Kiddie. I'm not judgeing anyone.. But for christs sake.. call yourselves by what you are! D: I'm a newbie white hat, I hardly know shit. But, don't fall into the universal stereotypeing of hackers. =\

You must realize that the term hacker now means blackhat hackers. The term has changed, and there is nothing you can do about it. I personally don't like the change, but communication is only possible when you can get your ideas across, and that means you need to use the same vocabulary as everyone else.

BTW, L33T speak is for idiots.

Well, allegedly l337 was created by hackers! A secret underground language known only by the 'elite' hackers in subculture. Hence, l337, elite, notice the trend? =\ But, anyone with knowledge worth knowing, knows that the only hackers that use l337 are the ones makeing fun of it! the rest, are morons that should be drug out into the middle of the road and slaughtered like the moronic hordes of sheep they are. new_evil.gif

I feel the same, just more about emote icons than just ways of typing. Do people really need to add extra text to stress how they feel? Or could they just place it into the context of their speech, getting their feeling across via words they say/type, not how the words are typed.

If you happened to have noticed, I do try to keep as close to gammer as I can. I attempt to have structure in my text, though it maybe wrong, but it looks normal at first glance. I don't try to have flashy gimmicks, which is probably why I have yet to actually apply the new theme to these forums. I like plain things. Hell, I even block HTML crap in e-mail, since it doesn't need to be there. Same with IM clients. I don't see the pretty images, I use Miranda and use the default of no emote icons.

Still waiting to find someone who I can talk to normally via an online chatting protocol.

Please note that the above isn't directed at you. Its directed at the fact that people find faults in others, but cannot see it in themselves. Just like you dislike how others think of the term hackers, or how they use numbers in place of letters, others can see the same in how you do things, such as using punctation to demonstrate your emotions.

I try to keep the grammer correct in my sentances, but I am too lasy to perfect it. (I'm kind of a run on person, myself)

Emoticons have their places, and fulfill their job well. That doesn't mean you have a icon_smile.gif or a biggrin.gif in every sentance.

btw Lit was invented for short phrases (like shiat the hell up! or nioob) not as an essay writing tool. In the noobiefying depths of trench wars anger means death, so you need to lighten up your language tongue.gif

Personally, I have a slight difference in feelings.
There used to be groups of 'elite' hackers (Legion of Doom, DPAC) that were pretty god-like in skill. But the pedastal that they stood on has been completely eliminating by the popularization of 'hacking'. I am totally in agreement with 'script kiddies'. It's much better to know nothing about computers than to think you do, and just use someone else's work. I am very interested in computer security, and I love Linux, so I got interested in www.hackerslab.org, which is basically a hack tutorial. It's quite fun, being all legal, and it's nice to know how to do the basic stuff by myself.

I also have no problem with l33t, but I definitely have a problem with people that use it to appear to be someone they aren't. L33t has grown into a recognition of a little computing skill, and that's why it annoys me when people who know nothing use it (I'm not talking about people here on this board). I also thought fudle's idea was pretty funny (but not if he's serious).

And, yes, I agree with Mine in the fact that specific and solid words are the best way to communicate your feelings. Not cussing, not shouting, not emoticons, not disrespect. But emoticons do have their place in casual chatting.

And, on a lighter note:

You see, thats the problem. Everyone has some lame 'language' they created that they think is cool! Well if your just changeing letters to numbers, or useing i's like they are a magic bean to be planted in all the words of the world, your not being creative. No. Your being like that little special ed kid who sits in the back of class banging his head into the desk screaming 'I'm a f*cking teapot!'

If you want to brag about a new language, don't expect to be welcomed with open arms. If it's just useing I's or numbers, it isn't new. It's been done for years now, in many different places. Now, if you make a sister language to Klingon, or Drow, or even Elven... Then you may brag. Til then, expect little to nil when it comes to mercy.

Now, I'm not flaming you. I'm just flaming your 'idea'. icon_rolleyes.gif

Leet was never 1337.
At most, it was used as a way of shorthand writing and to evade search engines from finding your warez sites, so only other members of the ring who knew what to search for could/would be able to find them.

Those who turned it onto a full crap ass wannabe language are bunch of kids trying to look cool, which they were not, nor was 1337 ever was, and at the most part, it just made the real people laugh at those who had used it.

To quote from a post of mine in another forum which I just spent 20 minutes searching for (just for you sa_tongue.gif):

Quote:

Use of 1337 speak had two reasons:
A. Hosts have bots that scan around for keywords, they had to be tricked lest your site would be found and consequentialy be shut down, yet you still needed to allow those who were in the know-in that you did want to enter to find your site.
B. Early on email services charged by size of message so like you now have ingenuitive(sp?) text messaging evolving on cell phones, 1337 speak saved on bytes in emails as it allowed you to express more in less characters, it was more fund-wise that way.

With the death of the BBS era by the evolution-revolution of apranet and coming of the WWW Inet. most of the hackers relocated onto IRC, but it is just not the same anymore.
With gifs, photoshop and now flash, ascii art has been forsakened, no more shortkeys to access areas... a tradition lost, a legacy burried.

warez d00d, keke, hail the courier!

At any rate, 1337 speak never was an actual speech.
Those who DID spoke 1337 non stop as if it was a fluat language were wannabees and now-a-days newbies who try to impress people as if they're vets (yet, again, vets do not speak 1337 unless they're real llamahs).
1337 speak was primarily used as said above, in small quantities, such as the notorius "war3z", it never was completly converted onto "\\/4/23$" or something.
It was the gamer community that sprung it out blowen onto something that it was not, or not meant to be.
So ussually when you encounter people who go 1!|<3 7|=|!5 or speak LiKe ThiS they are generaly little kids looking for attention thinking they're being cool doing it.

Does anyone have a spare 14400 modem and the terminate proggy? biggrin.gif

Well now! If you thought thatw as deep, think of this! Yes, we may have pride, we may have freedom, but these rights and liberties only go to the edge that is 'moral law' =\ Do we have to listen to the president? No. Do we have to follow the laws? No. But must we? Yes. Why? Because, over 68% of the land we know follows these laws, beliefs etc. Freedom of speech only goes as far as what you can say that DON'T piss off the majority of this mass. It's a cancerous mass, this 68%, but like any cancer we'll die if we simply cut it off. Freedom of speech, is no real freedom at all, take the child that decided it'd be cool to call himself a name that offended certain 'groups'. The forum on which this nic was registered and used was soon shutdown, and the kid arrested. Still, other cases revolve around the oppression of personal beliefs. African comics can mock, and say blatently racist remarks about other races, but when a 50 year old lardass says it, dear god! He's a card carrying member of the clan! Other cases speak of a woman cried oppression because she wanted to take her license picture with a cover over her face, as was her beliefs. She took this to court! and people rallied behind her! But, when a simple teacher wishes to post the ten commandments... Oh hell, you just opened up a can of worms that could result in the fact children might actualy think they're are conciquences in this world. They refused a man to teach theory, placed him in jail for wanting to teach such a perverse as 'Darwin's Theorys'. I don't know, I won't stand in front of anyone for wanting to talk as morons. But, you best believe i'm gunna point out how stupid you look to me, and the other 32% icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah, I agree with you on a lot of this stuff, and that's why I really want to get out of America. The whole world is a moral pit-hole right now, but America's definitely the bottom. It's quite sad how just no one cares about being right anymore.
Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) wrote:

And I totally agree. Why must nobody care anymore? Why does everybody feel they need to be the same as everyone else. Really, people who speak l33t are higher than the other people, at least they're different from the majority (although that might not be true soon.)

I think Knight's definition said it best with: 'the state of being uneducated or uninformed'.

Ignorant people don't necessarily want to learn, the 'want of knowledge' in the definition is just an old use of the word 'want', meaning 'lack of'.
