What is this .png format i heard about, and how do you convert to it?

In some parts, yes, it did expire. In other parts, no, it did not. Anyways, png file are ALWAYS smaller than gifs, plus they support more features (>8bit, alpha transparency), and less annoying ones (no animated).

How do you convert pictures to png format? Its not an option in save as menu in mspaint

ie. Adobe Photoshop 7.0
