Whats the best thing to use to make your own tilesets? Using MS paint is a royal pain in the ass...
Also, whats a good program to make 3d ships for shipsets?

I asked about tiles at SFN (ssforum.net), I would suggest Photo Shop for tiles as Paint Shop is lacking in some of its features.

Adobe Photoshop is another good one. I'd say Adobe for 3d ships as well. Poke your nose around the site a bit, and you'll probably stumble over a post with a link directing you to a plug-in that you would use inside of Adobe Photoshop to aid in the creation of 3d ships.

Or for a more legal, and portable, means, try Gimp. Open source, and very good.
