for some reason my zone list has sscx extreme games, which doesnt work. so if i want to play eg i have to delete the whole program and re-download to get sscu extreme games, because that does work. after playing i close the continuum program and when i reopen it sscu eg isnt there anymore. i click on the zone list and i doesnt even give me the option to re dowload it. so every time i want to play eg i have to re-dl the whole program. someone please tell me how to fix this. |

Put this as your Directory Server Address List-
sscentral.sscuservers.net sscentral.trenchwars.org
edit- Wait now that I read that again, you mean you can't download the list or the button is gone/unusable? |

i mean that when i click on the list of zones that you can download the only ones that are there are the ones that i already have. the only time new ones come up is when i re-dl the whole ss program. |

Make sure your Directory Server Address List says the following:
Quote: | sscentral.sscuservers.net, ssdir.playsubspace.com, warpath.bluetoast.org, sharvil.nanavati.net, dir.cz.sshq.net |
Also, before re-downloading a zone, you should first remove it by double clicking on it. After that, press the big "Download" button to get a new list of all zones available. To add a zone, just double click on it and make sure it's green. Press OK, and you should be able to play. |

Should use auto.subdir.net auto.subdir.org instead. ;o Those are better directory servers. |

Not necessarily; the only advantage is that if one of the independant directory servers (aka sscentral.sscuservers.net) goes down, these ones will still retrieve a list (and can be updated for changes without the end user having to do it themselves). However, the flaw is that if your (or snrrrub's) directory server goes down, you end up with the same result; only that you'll be retrieving nothing instead moving on to the next server. |

Both mirror each other and also every directory server that currently exists. If Snrrrub's went down, it would make the most minuit difference so long as people include other directory server's in their server.ini and not JUST auto.subdir.net/org.
Another reason it is better is because it's faster and more responsive. Go and check it out yourself.
Download a listing from sscentral.sscuservers.net and just observe how long it takes to download it. Then try auto.subdir.net/org and observe.
auto.subdir.net/org is faster and more responsive because unlike sscentral.sscuservers.net, it is not a polling server, but a real game server.
I don't mind if you use other directory servers, but I think it would be unfair to not mention auto.subdir.net/org and next to that also mention the uniqueness of it compared to all the other existent servers. |

I DISAGREE, dir.cz.sshq.net is BY FAR the best, and is super-1337!

In my original explanation, if you were just using one, then you end up with the same problem as using the actual directory server itself. If you use both, it's the same effect as listing multiple directory servers. I've already mentioned the benefits, but the flaw still remains wherein if "auto.subdir.net" goes offline itself, you're stuck with a disfunctional directory. It's got more features, but stating that it's better would be misleading.
And since you asked me to compare the speeds, "auto.subdir.net" points to nothing, while "auto.subdir.org" takes about 2-3 seconds. In comparison, "sscentral.sscuservers.net" downloads as soon as i push the button. I should probably mention that this is technically relative to the distance between you and the server; so what's better for you isn't always better for others (that's why things like speedtest are flawed).
Edit: @Aceflyer, it's not a conflict, it's merely discussing the flaw with directory servers. It seems as if LC's goal is to deprecate the use of listing other servers by simplifying everything down to one single and easy-to-remember name. However, although I don't disagree that his is probably more beneficial, it doesn't solve anything in the long run. And I should also point out the reliability of Snrrrub's server should be questioned, in that he's only "reappeared" in recent months, so switching may not be better until it's known that his servers will remain available in the long-run. |

You should all care less about dir servers, because that's really a small and uncritical part of subspace. It worked, works and will work. Never change a running system.
It's not about speed either... how often does the avarage player download a zone list? Three times a year?
I appreciate the work LC put in it, but in my opinion it was unnecessary.
And the only reason I could imagine one codes a directory server is to learn about the ss core protocol and not having to deal with encryption and gaming stuff all the time.
@Aceflyer: You better get used to it, most threads turn out that way _________________ It's a shark! Oh my god! Unbelievable! |
