so here's my situation:
i want to get a new laptop. on this laptop i want linux. unfortunately most laptop's come with vista on it. vista requires lots of memory while linux can run on minimal memory. on another note, i want to continue developing windows applications.
does wine work on making windows applications? including .net framework?
can i make a .iso out of my computer's current xp?
can i obtain a copy of xp still?
are non-scripting languages such as c able to work on linux and windows (os-dependent).
i can dual boot but the problem with that is that i have vista, which what i hear requires like 2gb memory while linux does not require much more than 512. i could save money by getting a 1gb laptop instead of a 2gb.

Obtaining a copy of a XP cd is very easy... Either get one from some file sharing program, or ask people around you. You only need to copy the cd, you don't need the activation key.
You would save even more money by getting a laptop that doesn't come with Vista...
Also, if you want Linux just because it runs with minimal config, why not just use XP? XP with the "classic" skin and minimal effects can run smoothly on a Pentium 3 550MHz with 128MB RAM... _________________ (Insert a bunch of dead links here)

consider runnings windows or linux in a virtual machine. VMware player is free (and so is VMWare server, which is almost identical to VMWare workstation as far as I can tell) _________________ SubSpace Discretion: A Third Generation SubSpace Client

Snapshots and hardware acceleration are two I use a lot in workstation not in server.

you can pause the virtual machine and copy it for a snapshot... although the workstations ones should be less intrusive than that (never had a need to try it)
hardware acceleration... hmm only if you hardware supports it?

eepc?
my computer is so old that the graphics card doesn't support linux, that's the problem. i could just buy a new graphics card, but it's not the only thing that needs updating. i'm still running on 256 ram.

I find that hard to believe!! linux runs great on old hardware.

i've tried everything. live cd's, wubi. then i've tried ubuntu, fedora, suse, kubuntu on vmware like you were saying.
i have such an old graphics card that it is not supported anymore, thus i cannot update my driver.
edit:i took an image once of what it looks like in vmware
image did not load

If you installed linux natively instead of in vmware, it would probably work. I think it's more of a vmware issue because I remember something like that happening to me. Make sure you check all your graphic settings carefully. I guess it's possible that vmware just doesn't want to strain the graphics card or something.
