hey, i'm trying to get ubuntu installed on my computer but i'm having some trouble.

first i tried wubi, but it never works. it installs but when i reboot it gives me this very odd installation.

then itried burning an image (.iso) to a cd. then i reinserted the cd and nothing happens. i also tried booting with the cd and nothing happens.

i don't know what i'm doing wrong, any help?

yes i am a newb to linux.

Thanks for not being vague at all.

I have no idea what Wubi is like, but you could just complete the installation. If the installation is so odd for you to keep you away from it, you might as well want to wait trying Linux. icon_confused.gif

Anyway, did you actually burn the image as a FILE to the CD? I assume you're capable to do that. sa_tongue.gif
Make sure the image was actually written to the CD, not as a file. Then boot from the CD and go from there.

yeh it's very odd.
lots of forums ask if i actually burned the image, and not just copyed and pasted. yes i burned the image.

i've checked and compared the content on the cd. it's correct.

i've gone to bios and set the cd to trigger boot first, then windows. i can tell that it try's to start off of cd but doesn't work.

tomorrow i'm going to try ubunu 7.04, maybe that will work.

after that i'll quit.

Why are you using 7.04 when 7.10 is available?

what i meant in that last post, is that i was currently trying 7.10, but that wasn't working out well so i was going to see if 7.04 was any different. i'm getting more progress now that i'm using vmware and isoburner.

Lol, it takes that much work to install Ubuntu? Surely not... I'm pretty sure it has a graphical installer like Fedora. Or wait... are you installing it on a computer that you plan to have only Ubuntu on? Or are you trying to run a dualboot?

I've got no experience with Ubuntu, but when I tried Fedora Core the few times I've used it, all you had to do was burn the ISO and then boot from CD. Not that I think the problem is with Ubuntu, but you might want to try installing Fedora Core. If that doesn't work either, then I guess the problem would have to lie somewhere in the CD drive or maybe in the BIOS... or maybe the default video settings/drivers it tries to load when it loads the graphical installer?

i think it's my old computer. for example, the alternate (met for older computers) worked better but not quite enough. my graphics card couldn't even display the desktop. older graphics cards like mine are meant for windows and windows only.

this is all what i'm guessing as the problem. i don't really actually know.

Have you tried installing from a command-line based installer? I'm pretty sure all monitors can display commandline stuff with default settings. I don't know for sure.

Well, in this case, I think you're going to have to load the proper video drivers through commandline. I have NO idea how to do that, but some generic ones will probably do fine, if there aren't any linux drivers specifically for your card.

i'm hopefully going to get a new laptop since the cost of upgrades and such would make it smarter to just buy a laptop. if that makes sense.
