I just found out that my DNS I use (OpenDNS) has many features like: Parental Controls, shortcuts to websites, custom error pages, phishing filters, ect.
What I liked the most is you can make it so if you type in "mgb", it redirects to https://forums.minegoboom.com. I setup my vnc and all through that. Just give it a quick glance. |

I just modify my host's file to do that for me.
127.0.0.1 is no longer just 'localhost' but 'me' as well. _________________ Performance is often the art of cheating carefully. - James Gosling |

I used the host file to block some annoying publicity/pop-up/spam sites *cough*poker*cough*
Stupid poker sites keep popping up from everywhere... now they just pop a blank page and no additionnal pop-ups. wee.
But I didnt think of making nice shortcuts... mhmmm. I think some browsers have that feature, didn't see anything like that for IE though. _________________ (Insert a bunch of dead links here) |

You know what you can also do?
Spoof your router's MAC and let all clients think your system is the router. Enable ipv4 routing for the Linux kernel. Run squid in accelerator mode on your machine and make it use the only allowed external proxy server as parent host.
Why exactly I did this? Long story. |

Lol why would I use squid for that?
Actually, no, ISP (xs4all.nl) limited the school's connection to only services run by xs4all because of this thing called "abuse". They do run their own proxy server and allow connections over that, but it wasn't running in accelerator mode, so I had to run my own proxy server in accel mode and forward all connections to xs4all's.
The ARP spoofing was to make all secured windows machines believe I'm the router, since we can't execute anything, we can't change any settings and we can't set a proxy server.
So, all clients thought my machine was the router, sent their requests to it. My accel squid got the requests, forwarded them in a valid form to the xs4all proxy and we had a way to browse the web without anyone having to use some proxy manually.
The "abuse" or whatever was probably generated from some student taking an infected laptop on the network.
I had an argument with the system admin over this, he actually thought it was our fault.
I do blame him for believing networks with wireless clients, most of these clients run by students, would be anything close to safe.
He didn't lock anything down network-wise. Lol, he even said he would only contact the ISP if we all ran a virus-scan on our laptops.
Dude, what the hell? Learn to do some packetfiltering, at least. How could you ever trust students who don't really care about a school's network with a completely open connection? |

Well I was wondering but my suggestion was far simpler than the truth. |
