ok so i was wondering if someone could help me here, i know its not subspace related but i could really use some help.
I have a di 634m dlink router hardlined to my desktop and then we also have a couple of wireless laptops connected to it as well. So i can connect wirelessly with my laptop but when i came home this afternoon from school and booted up my desktop the internet did not work. i went into the network connections and it said it was connected but it was sending and recieving next to nothing in packets.
So now i'm at a loss of what to do, i've reset the router twice, i've restarted the computer, and i've gone through some of the more basic settings as well as checking the cordand nothing. it might be of note that when i checked my log on the router it said it was rejecting a decent amount of packets continually from a certain ip (wether it be my desktop or not i'm unsure).
any suggestions?
as to the network controller i have a nvidia nforce networking controller with a driver version of 4.7.5.0 and the latest being 50.0.9.0 but i cant seem to find that particular driver anywhere.
one more thing, if i disable the network connection it wont let me reconnect saying the network failed. yet if i do it a few more times it eventually reconnects.
if you need more information let me know. thanks in advance
UPDATE: so my computer settings show a 169.254.x.x ip adress for my computer, and iprelease renew does not work. doing a network diagnostics scan shows that the realtek rtl8139 family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC failed the scan with the two area's it failing in being connecting to the dhcp server and the DNSServerSearchOrder.
so i've come to the conlusion that its a dhcp and dns error i'm just not sure how to fix it. |

I think your post is a pain to read.
Anyway, as a temporary fix try getting a static IP address (outside the dynamic range, preferrably).
Copy the DNS servers' IP addresses from the other computers. You should be able to get them by using ipconfig /all.
Windows lets DHCP (by default) configure its DNS servers. So, well, it's probably a DHCP problem.
Try turning the DHCP server off and back on.
Maybe you should try using a packet sniffer to see what the hell is going on.
I'm not sure, and I'm kinda in a hurry. Good luck. |

Wait, is your NIC nvidia or realtek? Maybe there's some conflict there?
Can you show us what ipconfig outputs? _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. User assumes all risk of use. Cyan~Fire assumes no responsibility for any loss or delay resulting from such use.

my NIC is built in, the networking controller is NVIDIA nForce Networking controller, and the NIC is the realtek one.
ipconfig outputs
Connection-specific DNS suffix:
Ip Address: 169.254.236.137
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 169.254.236.137
i tested the cable last night, and the cable is fine, but the housing on the port for the cable is a little loose. so i went out and bought a new NIC card and i'm working on installing that but my computer fails to recognize it so we'll see. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Hmm obviously something isn't working with DHCP or the physical connection itself.
Have you tried connecting a different computer to the same port on the router? |

all drivers are up to date, changed the cable, changed the port i connected to on my computer and my router. nothing else hardware wise else to do, now i just need to figure out what settings aren't getting through. any ideas of what to try? |

i've come to the conclusion its something to do with the router. i've changed cables and ports on the router and tried several different different computers and not a single wired computer can access the internet.
i've released and renewed the dhcp but that didnt do anything. i've reset the router, unplugged it and let it sit and then plugged it back in, and still nothing. i'm fairly decent with computers but not with networking which is why this is so frustrating because i simply cannot figure out what the problem is. thank you so much for your help so far Cyan and solo. |

Well, it definitely does sound like the router then. At least they're pretty cheap these days. |
