Well, I have the player, console and server installed.
Probably went overboard, but I like being thorough.
Now I went to gentoo and am sitting here:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2
So say I d/l the install.
What do I do next with my end goal being to run a virtual machine with gentoo as the OS?
And do I need to partition part of my HD for this purpose? Will the VM player do it for me? Is this done without destroying the rest of the HD's info (ala norton partition magic, not reformatting the entire HD just to repartition part of it)? |

Choose a manual install for Gentoo (Guided install sucks ass). Just get a stage 3, who cares.
Make sure to get a graphical environment and use something like KDE as desktop.
I don't think you have to partition your desktop for this. I haven't used VMware in a few years, but you could use an image file as virtual machine. |

It is only a stage3 install now in the Gentoo Handbook.
For the disk for Gentoo, when you create a new image inside of VMware Server (you don't need any of the other ones, it is self-contained), you tell it how much disk space you want it to have. If you have the free space, 10-20G should be plenty, though 8G seems to be common. Depends what you want to do with it, a console only or a full X system with OpenOffice/Firefox. Tell VMware to mount the gentoo iso file for this virtual machine, and follow the Gentoo Handbook for everything else.
Anything specific for Gentoo under VMware is covered in the HOWTO Install Gentoo on VMware in Windows NT/2K/XP wiki article if for some reason you want to compile your own kernel. |

you could try sabayon linux, its gentoo based very easy installation. its the official distro of beryl now compizfusion... you can always switch to genkernel after if you like or build your own then you'll be on 100% gentoo.... lot easier then a stage3 install. if you need help hit up irc.freenode.net #sabayon good people there who will help you with whatever issue you may have. |
