I was reading around and saw how some people who have unlimited internet are getting disconnected for using too much bandwidth.
Here is one small story: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/30/tech/main597032.shtml
That link talks about how people who use the internet a lot (NetFlix offers streaming video, people download music, send home videos, ect.) are being disconnected even though they clearly have unlimited internet.
The reason this was bothering me was because I have the internet through my cell phone for when I travel. I don't want a random bill/threat saying I used too much bandwidth with my unlimited service. Comcast disconnects you at 100 GB (up/down combined) or 200 depending on your location. Verizon (phone?) disconnects at 5GB.
I called my ISP (Charter) and AT&T and they assured me that there is no limit at all on how much bandwidth I use. They said at AT&T I am paying for unlimited, so I can use as much as I want.
Have you guys had any problems like this before? I know I don't go over 200 GB a month on my home connection. I was only concerned about my laptop using my cell phone. They do offer aircard services. I wasn't sure if they would make me use a special plan or not if I consume so much bandwidth.
Do you guys have any issues like this? I don't see how they can offer unlimited if they have set limits. The last time I checked, infinity didn't stop at 5,000.
Charter states in their TOS that we are not allowed to run any kind of server (Game, WebServer,FTP). They don't want to use the bandwidth. God forbid DSL catch up with cable speeds. If you pay for the bandwidth, you should be able to use it in any legal way you chose.
Oh this is funny

So some old lady who opens an email attachment and spreads a worm by accident can lose her internet because she doesn't have an antivirus. Not everyone knows how all that works (or cares?). They just want to keep in touch with family and friends. |

If you live in an area with more people using the bandwidth, you'll be capped easier than others. If you live in an area with almost no other cable modem users, you can download/upload at 100% constantly without any harm.
Reason is because they oversell nodes. And if one person is screwing up a node for others, they'll boot you, even if you have unlimited. If your node isn't full or no one else there would abuse it like you would, you can abuse the hell out of it.
Ahh, the advantages of living in areas with old or rich people, where they don't use the internet like me. |

The other reason behind this is because of marketing, and sales. You want the bandwidth, you're going to pay for it. Nothing is ever unlimited for a cheap "monthly" price. _________________ Performance is often the art of cheating carefully. - James Gosling |

You need to get these things in writing, if they won't do it for you, then stay away. |

If you have unlimited internet on your phone are you using voip instead of paying them to make calls? Or are they crippling the speed and allowed protocols, like web pages only? _________________ ss news |

Well I don't even use half my minutes (700) and I have 2,400 rollover minutes. Free Mobile to Mobile helps on that end.
I'm currently using GPRS. I'm getting a phone with EDGE and HSDPA. The GPRS is too slow for VoIP, but EDGE/HSDPA isn't. I wasn't planning on using it for that anyway.
They didn't threaten me or anything. I just don't want my account to close if I travel and use my internet the whole way there and the guys be like, you're using media net for a laptop instead of a cell phone and you're transferring too much data. (Too lazy to fix grammar/don't care)
I did notice in the TOS for charter and comcast they tell you not to strain their network too much. When you look at 200 GB a month and you break it out it's only so many kbps being transfered ever second. It's not even a megabit. I don't see the problem.
The liability case cracked me up. The guys used VoIP and comcast shut down their internet. They couldn't call 911 if their sick child needed help. That would be a big lawsuit. (They had cell phones though o_O). |

I didn't think EDGE was quick enough for voip. But when you say "if I travel", I hope you don't mean when you go to Germany, because your service is'nt going to work there. |

I wasn't talking about Germany. I know it won't work there. All data plans are pay per use in other countries. I meant when I go places like vacation or just out and about. |
