Ok, here goes:

Beggining

Last week I bought a GeForce 6200 (AGP 8x) gfx card. Put it into my (AOpen MX4LS) motherboard and turned it on. Few minutes later, I hear a huge crack, power turns off, and i see smoke coming out of my (300w) PSU.

Procedure

As this has never happend to me before, i was pussified and was scared to touch my comp at all, so i let it sit for an hour. I then unplugged my PSU and opened the case. Obviously my PSU was burned out so i unscrewed it and took it out. Went into my spare (peice of shit) dell computer and took out the 200w PSU in there and put it into my computer. Only to find out that 200w wasnt enough. Bought a 400w PSU and put it into my comp, only to find out that it wont start. And here I am now.

Testing

I put my PSU in my dell computer and it booted up fine, so PSU works well. Fan was running, LED light, the whole 9 yards. Put it into my comp and no LED light, no fan running, nothing at all. I tried this with and without the new video card in the comp, as well as trying it with the old one in.

Suggestions

Put a paper clip inbetween the green and black wire on the 20pin PSU cable. Tried it

Replace the cmos battery My dell's is a different size, and no cash to buy a new one

Conclusions

Alot of people told me they think my Mobo is burnt and maybe my processor as well. I hope this isnt the case, because i dont have money like that to spend on new ones. Any ideas?

I've had one power supply pop on me. Tried another power supply, didn't boot up. I assumed the worst, and since it was about time for an upgrade, I bought a new CPU/MB/RAM. All the disks lived.

Two years later, get access to another motherboard/processor of the same type, figured I'd see what took a dive with the PSU blowout. CPU and RAM works (and is actively working) in the new motherboard. So the only thing I lost was the power supply unit and motherboard.

If you have any friends with compatible processor sockets/ram slots, give those a try in another system. I'm 99% sure your motherboard took all the damage and is completely dead, but your CPU/RAM still has hope.

Return it? If need be, to Walmart?

Im thinking about replacing what i have with this stuff:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116158

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813123008

Since its cheap and its compatible with what i have.

If anyone wants to be generous and try to find me some nice/cheap stuff, please do.

I need 478 pin intel socket, agp 8x slot, pc133 sdram, mATX, and at about 50 bucks.

I think im gonna buy the mobo first, then try it with my current CPU, if that doesnt work, then ill assume the CPU is shot and buy another.

For CPU, ill do something around...uhh..2ghz+, p4 intel, 478 pins, at around 50 bucks as well.

Or even if any of you guys have something for sale, im sure MGB has some stuff laying around tongue.gif.

Intel sucks, but if you're going to suck, you might as well suck a little less. Northwood is what? 6 years old? 7? FFS, get something made the last decade. There have been some major changes since the products you linked and they are called LGA775 and PCIe. Do what I did and buy a respectable mobo, CPU, RAM, and video for $250. Your system won't be the laughingstock of your geek friends and you'll actually be able to upgrade individual parts later instead of locking yourself into antiques.

(Yes, I know that Intel doesn't actually suck, I'm just an AMD customer myself.)

Lol, I was gonna say. There's not really any way you can say AMD or Intel either sucks. If there was a better company, though, Intel would be there, at least right now... I just wish they'd released their Conroe core before I built my computer. >_>
