I've noticed that Windows Vista looks a lot like Linux with the desktop apps and all. Has anyone personally messed around with Windows Vista? I heard it was faster than Windows XP. I personally like using Linux more than I do Windows XP. What are your thoughts on this?

Like always Windows will be a PC (Personal computer), and there are no manuals for it using jargoned up steps. It'll be for the simple user that has a advanced knowledge of clicking buttons. I think Vista more looks like OSX, mostly because of the dock.
Remember you can get a lot more out of Linux, but you have to know a lot more. Windows is just taking a step to help Linux and Mac users to be more comfortable with the new OS.

I did hear some where that Vista boots up in seconds, unlike XP taking a while to boot up every time, but that wasn't a direct source.

Also on that note, would any body like to talk about the nice look of MS Office 2007, I currently use BETA and I love it (I have spell check right on the top). Also what is looking good, is IE 7, but I don't know if they did anything about speed or security?

Even if there are no slots.
Just download and install, you'll be able to use it for 14days without a key.

I'd install it, if I only had 512mb ram icon_sad.gif

Linux is suitable for users that had someone else set it up for them, or if they know how to set it up, or if they used something that is just as easy/simple/user-friendly the Windows XP setup. But really, I think it's just a matter of whether the person is capable of setting it up or not. I think Windows products are far more easier. Altogether I like the Windows structure.

Everything in Windows XP is great. The only thing it's missing is what Linux has. This feature Linux has is how you can mess around with your harddrive without getting any popup saying "Permission Denied" when trying to delete an empty folder (for example), etc. Linux has more flexibility over file control.

Besides that, Linux has a butt load more vulnerabilities than Windows XP. Microsoft manages to patch their vulnerabilities in a reasonable to low amount of time, and for some enough to keep it from happening until they can release something even more sealing.

"Between January 2005 and December 2005 there were 5198 reported vulnerabilities: 812 Windows operating system vulnerabilities; 2328 Unix/Linux operating vulnerabilities; and 2058 Multiple operating system vulnerabilities" - Source

Windows Vista I have on my HDD from a free Beta Tester download. I think I have 2 CD Keys, or maybe that's Office 2007 Beta2. Unfortunately the copy I burned on a CD doesn't work. :< I get some error someway through the installation that prevents it from continuing. I'll probably give it another try sometime later. biggrin.gif

You mistake vulnerabilities for reported vulnerabilities. There is a difference.

where did you hear this?

alot of companies have made software to work with Vista, and they have even made drivers for graphic cards to work with Vista, so i don't know what you're talking about.

I'd say that if you have software that is not or cannot be updated(in a reasonable time after release) there is probably a better alternative to be had.
