Well I need to know how to encrypt a folder. JUST the folder, not all the subfolders/files. I already can do that. I searched google and they said to do this:

Quote:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. Locate and right-click the folder that you want, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click Advanced.
4. Under Compress or Encrypt attributes, select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
6. In the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box that appears, use one of the following steps:
• If you want to encrypt only the folder, click Apply changes to this folder only, and then click OK.
• If you want to encrypt the existing folder contents along with the folder, click Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files, and then click OK.

Only problem is that when I right click on the folder and go to General there is no Advance tab. I even searched in all the other sections. So if anyone knows any programs or something that is built into windows to Encrypt/Decrypt folders please let me know.

Two things:

1. Is the drive formated with NTFS you are trying to use encrpytion on?
Sounds to me the drive maybe FAT32 which is why there is no advanced box....

2. Is simple file sharing enabled.
Tools...Folder Options...View

check it is unticked i think that may help.

Btw i would recommend not using the build in windows encryption and use http://www.truecrypt.org/ if you want to protect your data. Backing up encryption keys on windows is a pain in the arse.

I am pretty sure i have FAT32 which is probably the reason.. Is there any program I could download to just encrypt folders and not everything in it? I have one that encrypts all the stuff inside it and that doesent help.

Whats the point of encrypting the folder but nothing inside it? Because if the folder is encrypted by nothing inside is, anyone can still access anything inside it. If you are trying to hide, such as your porn collection, and you don't want to wait for each file to decrypt so you can skip around the movie files faster, give Magic Folders a try. It is a Windows folder hiding program.

If you want a free security method, TrueCrypt is much better. You create a volume by creating a file of a predetermined size, and name it anything you want. So it could be called c:\windows\restore.dll or something and be a gig or so. If you Dad asks about it, just say thats how Windows does its rollback feature. When you run TrueCrypt, you open that file and supply it with a password. It will mount it as a new drive, and you interact with it like normal.

If you open a non-TrueCrypt file, it will still ask you for a password. Why? Because TrueCrypt files don't have anything that say it is an encrypted file. The only way you can tell is if you decrypt it with a password, and something tangible comes out.

As for converting to NTFS, Google it and you'll find good info.
