Ive finally gotten around to setting up a local server to replace the mess of windows machines with file sharing and all that nonsense enabled. The server will be running windows server 2003, but I have no desire to run IIS beyond what is required for my plethora of remote enviornments.
That said, I need some decent FTP server software, preferably something similar to Apache httpd as far as configuration is concerned and that runs as a windows service. Ill be searching googling for most of the night, but Im sure atleast one of you has done this before and knows off hand exactly what im looking for.
Thanks

I use FileZilla Server. It is split into a windows service and a GUI front end, which do not need to be running on the same system. It uses a XML file for configuration if you want to do all file based, but the GUI is pretty good. And it is open sourced, so free. |

My all-time favorite is Serv-U but I never searched for better ones. (Is this the same as Ekted said?)
Why? I like how clean its setup and how easy you can get it to work.
If you want it, I can provide you with a not-so-legal version
EDIT: Hmm that FileZilla looks good too (esp. since its open source) _________________

For FTP, i'd say Bullet Proof FTP. _________________ I know that I myself cannot do anything, that I will fall, and that I am a sinful man, but I know that I can do ANYTHING through God Almighty, whom strengthens me. |

Definately Serv-U, it is the easiest to use and has some really powerful options, i tried about 4 or 5 and this was by far the best. _________________ Regards,

I dunno about the best server program only having used WSFTPD, but this is the client I use. I prefer it over any others I've tried, and it's free for non-commercial use.

I actually prefer Cerebrus server software.
I use FileZilla as a client. |

Cerberus FTP is buggy. I reccommend you to NOT use it.
Serv-U is rather quite decent. |

BulletProof FTP Server.
Does WS_FTP has server as well? Then grab that if so.
I would stay away from smart/cute ftp. _________________ Replacing yazour untill the whore returns.

Well, Heres a quick report for anyone who cares:
I gave Serv-U a try, and was relatively unhappy with the results. While the GUI tries to make everything easy, trying to properly create/manage users and properly jail them was not possible with any form of directory sharing or security. Not only that, the free version is too limited in what I plan to do.
Im going to try FileZilla next, and probably last. Since its open source, Ill be able to modify/add stuff when I need to. Thanks to everyone whos thrown out suggestions.

Huh? You're the one that recommended me to use Cerebrus, and I found no bugs in it (though I haven't used it in a while). |

Re Smong's comments: bug 1108974. Yeah, seeing as that bug still hasn't been fixed, I'd avoid FileZilla. _________________ This help is informational only.
