On my PC at home, I have installed subspace server and created my own zone and it was a snap.

I also have a laptop computer, and figured it would be easier to work on my sibspace projects when I wasn't at home, so I installed subspace server on my Dell laptop. I followed the same procedure in installing the server on my laptop as I did on my home PC, yet when I start the Continuum client on my laptop my local zone displays in red and when I try to connec to it I get a "Failed to conect..." message. The Biller and Subgame2 windows show no messages when I try to connect to my local zone.

The really odd thing is, I can see and connect to the SSCX subspace zones, but not my local server.

I've checked and rechecked my server.ini file and my subill.ini file and they all look correct (as far as I can see) - so I'm not sure how to proceed here.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.

My guess is your laptop is connecting to a different IP than your home pc. check to make sure you have the correct MISC:ServerIP in the server.ini

I have the server and the client both installed on my laptop. The server is for my own personal use in working on SS projects. No other people should be able to see it or connect to it. I have both the server and client installed on my laptop and I'm trying to connect the client on the laptop to the server on the same laptop.

My guess is your laptop is connecting to a different IP than your home pc. check to make sure you have the correct MISC:ServerIP in the server.ini

ok, some more information. I use my laptop both at home and at work. At work, I can see all the other subspace zones in the client in green, and the ping updates itself, but when I try to connect to any zone I get a "Connection to server lost." message. From home, though, I am able to connect to the zones properly. I need to verify that I can connect properly from the laptop, though. I believe this could be a firewall issue when I'm running the client at work. However, it doesn't explain why I can't connect to the local server on the laptop from home, does it?

In any case, I'm attaching my ini files for you to review.

Default's got it. Please, people, don't post if you're wrong.

no, I did not use "Add Custom" in the Zones dialog to add my new zone.
It appeared in my download list and I added it that way. (Thanks for your support Cyan =P).

In other news, I did make a mistake. I cannot connect to any SS zone from my laptop. When I try to connect to my local server, I get the "Failed to connect to server..." error. When I try to connect to an SSCX zone, I get a "Connection to server lost." error. This occurs from both my home and work environments.

I think this rules out firewalls in my case (since from my network at home I can definately connect to SS SSCX zones from my PC). Any thoughts?

I'm using the .38 client on my PC, but my laptop is running the 0.39 prerelease 1 client, and both laptop and PC are running the 1.34.14 subgame2 server.

I don't know how to proceed here, or why I cannot connect to any zones from my laptop from either my work or my home.

Thanks.

Are you on a network?
Do you connect to the internet directly or through a router, hub, etc.?
Are you certain you don't have any firewalls or execution management type softwares operating?

The majority of the SSC zones require .39pr1 client inorder to play on them, FYI.

well, I'm taking a step back here. Forget the local zone I was trying to get working, instead, I just need to get the SS client running and make sure I can connect to SSCX zones. After that I'll see about the local server I was running.

The laptop I am running (when at home) gets its internet frrd from a cable modem. There are several PCs in the house already connected through a wireless hub. I have tried connecting both through the wireless network and through a direct ethernet cable plugged into the hub and my laptop.

No good either way.

The Network Connections section of Windows (I'm running XP Pro - btw) lists my connection as a LAN and its status is "Connected, Firewalled".

I'm assuming this is Windows own "built-in" software firewall. Is this typically a problem?

I didn't have any issues with Windows firewall on my PC when I set up a server over there...

I tried removing .39 prerelease 1 client and reinstalled .38 client and I was able to log in to subspace successfully from my laptop.

The issue appears to be the .39 prerelease 1 client.

From looking at the "whatsnew.txt" this is all I see thats changed -

Continuum 0.39pr1
-----------------

* fixed proximity bomb bug introduced in 0.38
* fixed crash in some systems few seconds after entering zone

Is something to do with the second fix causing me issues, or did something else change that is causing the problem?

Did you install .39pr1 properly?

The steps I took in installing the .39 prerelease client were -
1) Get the continuum39pr1.zip file from SS downloads.
2) Extract the txt, exe, and dll file from the zip.
3) Copy those files to my Continuum directory.
4) Rename the old Continuum.exe to Continuum.exe.038
5) And rename the new exe from the zip to Continuum.exe

That was all that needed to be done to upgrade to .39 pr 1, I believe.

ok, I reinstalled both .38 and .39pr1 again.
Restarted my local billing server and local subgame2.
Added my zone by using the "Add Custom" button this time, and everything worked. No idea what the issue was, but I can get to my arena now.

Sorry for the trouble, and I appreciate all the help guys.

The in-built firewall is generaly a problem, it'll prevent you from communicating with the other servers in the outside world.
It is suggested that while playing you turn it off.

On a broad-side note, it is not the best of firewalls, I'll advise you to get a more around-about protection.

If you set [Directory] IP to be empty in server.ini then it won't appear when you try and download a list of zones.
