Im just wondering.. what gave the makers of SS the idea for...SS? How long did it take to make it?
Was it tough?
How many people did it take to make it?
Does it take money to make a game? Or just a compiler and knowledge of a software development language?
What gfx program was used to make the original SS gfx?
What year was it started?
All of this im wondering..
Not that I want to be a professional game designer..but it would be cool to make a game one day when I've reached the level of knowledge needed to make a game..
So far I've only made a chat based game for mIRC in the 6th grade..
It was Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.. I figure.. It took about 3 months to make it.. And its just a chat based fighting game.. So mabye it would take about 3 years to make a game like subspace? Of course, I made it alone.. Mabye it would be less ammount of time to make with more than one person..
I've only been playing this game for about 8 months..
Just wondering.. |

A really decent coder could make a complete Subspace client from scratch in about 6-9 months. This does not include all of the graphics/sounds, nor the game server, billing server, or directory server.
Note that Subspace, being a 2d game, is an order of magnitude simpler in graphics and physics. If you do into 3d, expect to have to get into much higher levels of math and modeling. _________________ 4,691 irradiated haggis! |

Math.. mainly geometry? Including trig and algebra, eh?
lol, how would you test the game if it has no gfx? lol.. just wondering.. anyway, six to 9 months isnt bad if you know your stuff |

He means that his estimate doesn't include the time to make the graphics. As for testing it without graphics, you can imagine using filler graphics (like a trace of a ship) before the final rendered warbirds are completed.
Yeah trig and algebra are probably the main ones that you'd use. _________________ SubSpace Discretion: A Third Generation SubSpace Client |

Calculus would come in handy though. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

Why calculus? I didnt take that yet.. Sadly Im only in the 10th grade so far lol... Im 14.. I heard calculus is very hard.. But to me, math is jsut a bunch of formulas.. Thinking that makes it easy..for me |

calculus isn't hard, and you probably don't need it. |

Calculus really helps for understanding the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration. |

I will be taking maths (since I started a new year (year 9) which is incidentally my birthday tomorrow) technology and art for my GCSEs and doing tech in free periods.
Hope to advance in computer technology when I am older. _________________ Haha SpecShip |

You basically can't do physics without calculus. _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. User assumes all risk of use. Cyan~Fire assumes no responsibility for any loss or delay resulting from such use.

IB Physics doesn't use calculus, and it does quite a bit _________________

If it doesn't use calculus, then it's not physics. Physics without calculus was more like Systems Of Equations 101 for me.
Of course, I'm just being an elitist snob for fun; this isn't really my opinion.
The trouble with physics without calc is that when you finally do learn calculus, you basically relearn everything you learned in calculess (<- hehe) physics anyway. (Except for some optics and waves stuff. You relearn that in DiffEq.) |

I've learned calculus with Physics in IB (but only optionally).
But either way, you're using calculus whether you know it or not. d = vt + 1/2at^2? Integral. PEs = 1/2kx^2? Integral. Moments of intertia? Integrals. |

that's great, but given those equations you don't need to actually do the integral anywhere (the calculus part). All you need to know is velocity changes position and acceleration changes velocity. |

You don't need to know trig to be able to do sines and cosines. You can use the taylor series of e^x on complex variables to derrives Euler's equation and use that instead. The point is that it's very helpful, not necessary. |

Okay, so you don't need to know trig; you can just use calculus instead
edit:
Er, never mind. You can't derive Euler's equation without knowing trig either.
Really, you don't need to know trig to compute sines and cosines because the calculator has a button for it.
You don't need to know arithmetic because the calculator has a button for that, too! (~Sighs at the memory of a person pulling a TI-83 out of her purse to type in 40+8 and discover that the answer is 48.~) |

I often delegate simple arithmetic to my calculator in the middle of a problem because of the overhead of switching the arithmetic part of my brain back from commanding the calculator to doing the math itself.
People sometimes give me a hard time about it, but they always shut up when I still do the problem faster than they do. |

Wow, you're 14 and are in teh 10th grade? How did that work out..Most kids your age are in the 8th - 9th grade at 14..
Studies have shown that starting your kids out late can actually be better for them acedemicly..They also are less likely to end up making choices such as taking drugs/etc. Is this why you are so messed up? _________________ I know that I myself cannot do anything, that I will fall, and that I am a sinful man, but I know that I can do ANYTHING through God Almighty, whom strengthens me. |
