View/Options/Menu/Zone-Specific-Ships

This will show the ships.bm2 or shipX.bm2 files from that zone's folder. Unfortunately, the menu code doesn't look inside LVZ. With cont 0.39, LVZ are no longer extracted, so you need to put the files there yourself.

Yes you can change the text using shipinfo.dat, but again since it's no longer extracted, it won't be used unless you put it there manually.

Code: Show/Hide
; Blank lines and those starting with semicolons are ignored.
; Leading and trailing spaces are removed.
; All lines must appear in the order stated below.
; Use * by itself as a placeholder for the default text.

; 8 ship names in normal order (max 16 chars).

Warbird
Javelin
Spider
Leviathan
Terrier
Weasel
Lancaster
Shark

; 8 ship descriptions for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.
; Use * by itself here will use the ship name(s)
; defined above as "Select ship: <name>."

Select ship: Warbird.
Select ship: Javelin.
Select ship: Spider.
Select ship: Leviathan.
Select ship: Terrier.
Select ship: Weasel.
Select ship: Lancaster.
Select ship: Shark.

; Spectator description for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.

Spectate (watch the game).

; Ship box description for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.

Select one of eight ships to fly, or be a spectator. You can always change your mind while in the game.

i don't like that whole thing because then the zone owners are out to put the ship#.bm2 [or w/e] which means Continuum reads those ships, even in arena's that you don't want those ships being used. *sigh* So if you want your VIE ships for a subarena, you need to LVZ the VIE ships, even though they're defaulted, etc. etc.

I don't support using zone-specific ships for that reason; and since it's off by default (i think), many user's won't even tend to use it. But eh, more power to the user.

my 2 cents on that matter.

OK, maybe I'm slow, but I don't understand that. Can you give me a before/after for 38 and 39?

I don't know when the transisition came. The older functionality was that LVZ's were downloaded, and all the files in them were extracted into the zone--and possibily arena--directory. Now Cont downloads them and grabs the files from them in real-time without extracting. This allows users to put replacement graphics in the same folder as the LVZ to override things.

Oh. I never remember Continuum extracting zone files for me. It's before 38, at least.

They're changeable by using shipinfo.dat, which Ekted already mentioned.

It's fine for zones that don't use the standard ships (or use them rarely) - Metal Gear, for instance, would have little issue.

Regardless, it's only a problem for zones with disorganized staffers.

I think it was .38 that introduced the new .lvz behavior. I'm rather doubt it was worth it, but I haven't personally ever sought to determine how substantial the speed increase (by not extracting) is.
