You should be able to just pop in the XP install CD and wait for the "Hey, you wanna upgrade to XP?" equivalent message.
Personally, though, I would not recommend doing it that way. If it were me, I'd go through all my data, back up what I wanted to save, completely wipe the harddrive and do a totally fresh install for the new OS. |

I'd put it onto a CD, if its a small amount of data you can upload to an FTP drive; don't store on freaking floppies.. lol w/e you do .. cause they suck! -- store em somewhere you can access em w/o your HD _________________ Performance is often the art of cheating carefully. - James Gosling |

Or are you on a network? If so, just make on folder named "Shared" and then share that across the network and temporarily store your files on another computer. (That's how I do it.) _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. User assumes all risk of use. Depends on how large all your data is. I have an external hard drive that I use to backup data, then I use a program called Norton Ghost to duplicate my drive. I suppose that you only need to backup the files you want, you can use a CD burner for that, or even a flash-memory device if you are only backing up a small amount of data.
Edit: To move your files over your network, youll need to open a shared folder. I wish I was on a win98 comp so I could direct you, but I believe you have to open your network settings and then find the menu that allows people on your network to connect to your comp. Usually a shared folder will be created, or you could share your entire drive if you wanted.
BTW, There is a key on your keyboard to help you with all of this. Its called F1. Feel free to use it. |

Well, whatever you do, if you decide to use a network backup the following could help you a little.
1 - Sharing a directory on the target system
On the other computer (not yours, yours is the source) you need to share a directory, for example the directory "Share" on the C:\ drive.
Right-click on the directory and look for something named "sharing", set it up so you can put data into the directory from another system on the network.
For a similar example check this page.
2 - Sending the files from the source to the target system
Now, at your computer (system A) you'll need to start looking for system B, to be able to transmit your files to it.
Every computer in the domain has a name, you can find more information about that here.
In your browser (or Windows' explorer) enter the name of the target system prefixed with 2 backslashes ("\\"), so if I wanted to access the system named "Cheese" then I would type \\Cheese.
You should be able to see the shared directory on the target system now (assuming all settings were set right before).
3 - Making a backup
Open the shared directory, copy all the files you want to backup to it. |

The stuff I might never use again I would probably burn to CD's. The other stuff I would put on fast USB memory. But I notice after I partition my USB mem win98 sees all partitions but winxp only sees the first one, which is a shame since I have linux on the first partition with like only 5mb free space. |

When I upgraded to Win XP Pro, I used a DVD+R to backup all the data. It's better than a mere CD-R (DVD+R has 4.17 GB, CD-R has 700 MB) |

Meh Cyan, if I had to get every single detail in that post it would be over 1000 lines long.
Pfft, USB2 HDD's and LAN connections all da way!
Nah, the stuff I think of that I won't ever need again I dump on DVD-R's, but well my external hard drives and my other computers are victims too for backups. |

Actually Blockbuster sells them for cheap, but "expects" the user to make a DVD outta it. However, you can use it for data without actually writing the disc.
And Roxio, (I think), made a program so you don't need a DVD Burner to make data DVDs. |
