Ok I've been programming MervBot bots for HZ for a while now so I know a thing a two about them. But the other day someone wants to bring a personal bot into our zone and we tell him he can't. But that got me thinking that I've always been able to bring bots into the zone without needing any special access. It doesn't need to be smod+ nor does it need to be on the VIP list. I can give a bot any name I want and successfully get it into HZ albeit it can't do much without any powers.

So I start doing some research on this board and notice there seems to be conflicting reports. One place I read:

mervbot doesnt need sysop as long as it can get into a zone using subspace protocol.

which makes perfect sense to me. Why wouldn't a bot be able to connect to a zone as long as it does the same things a player client does to log on? But in other places I read stuff like:

Quote:
Anyway, your problem is probably that the bot is not VIP or smod+ (it has to be one of the two).

So I'm really confused. Does a bot need vip or smod+, and if it doesn't then how can one prevent personal bots from entering a zone? Theres gotta be a way as I'm pretty sure I can't just bring my bots into any other zones, but for some reason I can bring any bot I want into HZ.

some zones have turned on the continuumonly feature in the server.ini file of subgame2. It will make it so that subspace clients cant get in the zone, only continuum can. Bots use subspace encyption and packets, so they need to be on the VIP list or have mod+ powers inorder to get into a contiuum-only zone

But I can get my mervbots into HZ fine without being on the VIP list or having any powers at all. And I know for a fact that HZ is Continuum only. All it does is say "This arena is Continuum only etc..." but it doesn't kick the bot out.

I guess my question is, Somehow bots are allowed to enter HZ without being on the vip list and without having smod. HZ is Continuum-only. Is there any other way this could happen?

Hm, just disallow VIE clients; and it should pop up in red saying "incompatable network protocol" attempting to login when they do...

Can't VIE clients spec but not play if AllowVIEClients is set to 1 and ForceContinuumOnly is set to 0 in server.ini?

DOH! I always knew about ForceContinuumOnly but never saw AllowVIEClients. Figured there was only one variable for it so I never looked for a second. Woops icon_confused.gif

Yes, but as I've just found out if you do that then you'll be allowing people to bring bots into your zone even without vip or smod. AllowVIEClients apparently cuts off all access to your zone bye VIE users, whereas ForceContinuumOnly determines whether VIE clients can come out of spec or not.
