It's rated the top game by a large margin at Board Game Geek, The pics didn't impress me, but I read the rules, and now I'm looking to buy it.

Never heard of it, but I'd recommend you try Axis and Allies. Very good.

I've played all the games you can buy in big name stores. I played Axis & Allies for years. None of them come close to the top of the list. A&A was pretty fun though.
