Tempering and masterworking in Diablo 4 Season 8 introduce two powerful systems that expand the customization depth of your items. These mechanics help shape builds around specific gameplay needs, allowing greater flexibility and long-term progression.
Tempering starts with manuals, each containing themed affixes like increased basic skill damage or improved barrier generation. You apply these manuals to eligible gear pieces—gloves, amulets, weapons, etc.—to gain bonus stats. The system is chance-based and requires materials and planning.
Each item has a limit on tempering attempts. Once all attempts are used, the item cannot be tempered further. This limitation adds a layer of decision-making where players must carefully pick manuals and ensure optimal affix rolls before investing further.
Masterworking takes things further. Once you've tempered an item, you can enhance its affixes through 12 upgrade tiers using materials found in The Pit. These tiers offer incremental bonuses, with tiers 4, 8, and 12 providing large power spikes to one affix at random.
To masterwork efficiently, you’ll need crafting materials like Obducite and Ingolith, which are found in progressively difficult levels of The Pit. Running the Pit regularly becomes a necessity, as these materials are the only way to significantly enhance item stats.
The synergy between these two systems is key. Tempering allows for personalized affix selection, while masterworking enhances those affixes. Together, they create powerful gear that can push your character beyond baseline potential.
For high-level players seeking efficiency in Season 8’s toughest content, both systems must be mastered. Plan your runs, store critical materials, and always temper before masterworking for the best results.
