I know this has been covered before, but I have already forgotten it...
Also, search didnt find anything...
Supposedly, putting ss://<url> somewhere in the zone description (i think?) somehow lets the continuum client somehow update the zone's ip/port without connecting to directory somehow?
Is this right?
If so, what is the procedure and results? _________________ SSC Distension Owner

It does NOT update the port, just the IP. Also the IP is only updated when the zone is red. It does a simple DNS lookup for the domain specified. Also, it has to be the LAST thing in the description or else it will not work.
Look at the trenchwars description for a good example |

I have seen 1 or 2 zones with ss:// as the first thing in the description. And it did not appear automatically on the end. Anyways, just test it |

I wouldn't really say TrenchWars is a good example since I don't recall them ever changing IPs or port in the first place. According to LC (and only one page away), the ss:// part should be the first part of the description and not the last. |

I am pretty sure it has to be at the end, look at a part of my zone.dat:

SSCU Trench Wars,66.36.241.110,5400,server.trenchwars.org,0
#SSCU Trench Wars - Sysops: DoCk> and PriitK - http://www.trenchwars.org ss://server.trenchwars.org
SSCC Metal Gear CTF,209.59.175.210,14000,,0
#ss://metalgearctf.com - An Infantry style Capture The Flag game with a breathtaking LVZ, and settings that will challenge even the most skillfull players. (MetalGearCTF.net)http://metalgearctf.net/ (Metal Gear Forums)http://forums.metalgearctf.net/
|
See the bold parts. See how there is no domain on the first line for metal gear?
I just tested this all locally. And it seems continuum parses the ss:// in the description when you add the zone from the zones dialog. After that, the description is meaningless.
The instant the zone turns red, continuum does a lookup for the domain name and updates the IP. |

I can't say much about Metal Gear, but if you're following the zone.bak/dat file, you should also notice:
BlueT Jackpot SVS,74.86.4.98,20000,ss0.hlrse.net,1
#ss://ss0.hlrse.net Classic SVS running-flag deathmatch, average-paced zone with complete optional LVZ (Home)http://jackpotsvs.hlrse.net
T3 The Gauntlet! (SSC),64.84.96.68,382,gauntlet-server.winbeam.com,0
#ss://gauntlet-server.winbeam.com Webpage: http://www.t3g.org |
While several that end in ss://... (e.g. hockey, eg, alpha, swz..) don't actually have their ss:// addresses added. RedStar is probably the only one that appends it in the middle, though it doesn't get updated. Another oddity is SSCX Warzone CTF, which adds ss://server.sscx.net, but it gets appended as server.wzctf.net. (an extra dot). |

I just started a fresh server.dat and it seems its added for both ss:// at the beginning and at the end.
Also deathstarbattle does not have ss:// in the descriptions, but the domain server.deathstarbattle.com is still added.
So there has to be more to it. Perhaps this is a unknown field in directory packets? |

so 'contains' means that it can appear anywhere in the description? |
