So in two classrooms we have gotten these computer desks. They look nice and everything but to my surprise the teacher said we are going to be running Linux. (She couldent think of it as first and said Lunex [ha ha chuckle chuckle] ) I was just wondering if anyone else runs Linux in there schools?

In addition I'm thinking of running a duel boot Windows XP / Linux. I don't know Linux much thus is why I'm going to play with it. Apawn researching the dual boot I noticed that there are many kinds of Linux, Preferences anyone?

I like Ubuntu and SuSe. I talked to a librarian about that once and she said they couldn't run Linux unless someone at the county board knew how to manage it. They have to monitor everything so they know who is on what website. Proxy ftw? VNC ftw?

I'm glad someone has decided to try it out. The students might need it one day. A company would probably hire someone that knows how to use two OS's instead of one depending on the job.

I'd probably force the HTTP[S] connections over a proxy and monitor those, or something.

At my previous school, Novell Bordermanager was used to control the computers remotely.

On my current school, RAdmin was running. Last year the servers weren't protected with a password, now they are, and I'm the only one who knows it next to the admin. Oh well, no point in abusing it anyway.

I'm not sure, a Proxy AND some remote control feature to do some closer inspection would be nice. But VNC isn't really made for just "checking up" on users...

Meh, whatever, time for sleep.

I meant that I bypass the filters and stuff by vncing to my computer. I can't even view these forums without it blocking it at school. I have a vnc applet that I host on my pc. That's how I go to what ever site I want to without being monitored.

There are many other ways to do that, BD. http tunneling comes to mind. Sorry, no link, but that's what I did at Lee. Anyway, I started my journey into Linux with Fedora Core 5. I use 6 now, but I've tried a few other OSes and they were either too complicated for me(Gentoo) or I just didn't like them(Debian). Besides, Fedora Core looks the best, as well. >_>
