I remember in 7th grade, we had to do projects about inventions for the future. Two of them I specifically remember which were the automatic cashier thing at a supermarket, and now this. And its funny because when the classmates used to come up with these ideas, the teacher laughed and would say things like "like thats gonna happen" or "that will be the day". Sure enough, 5 years later, shit is happening.
I dont know, I guess what im trying to say is that it makes me think of how the times are changing so fast. It seems like yesterday the kid proposed this project and now its in the works. Its starting to make me think about all those movies like "I Robot" and "Guide to Hitch Hiking (whatever)".
So what do you guys think is going to be next? Will someone invent a knife that toasts bread while you cut it? Or maybe NS-5's are in the making. Some people laugh now, but at the rate that technology is growing now, I give it another 5 years until robots are out. |

I totally agree with you. It would be selfish of us to say that those kind of things arent possible. We have robots already but I would say in the next 5 years thier on the market and will be able to do stuff for us. In 2008 (i think) the first flying car will be on the market for 300,000 or so. Hell they have a laser that acts like a keyboard. It puts a laser on a hard surface that looks like a keyboard, you press and key and it is just like a regular keyboard accept no keys. Technology advances to fast its unbealivible. So im going to say anything is possible. |

I'd guess that a few things are impossible to invent. Here is my list of impossible things:
Coffee that tastes good.
Well, that's all I can think of. |

What about ring watches? Atomic Bombs? gashi?
Specifically software can be a bad vehile for any and every idea. I don't need a stock ticker in my notepad and if you hadn't thought of them like this virii and spyware are inventive as well while only benefitting a few people and hurting others.
It's true though, what most everybody here has said about technology. I just wanted to amend your proposal in that we should have a smart inventive spirit. |

hehe... that gave me a good chuckle.
assuming that you meant robots that can do things for us... it will be longer than 5 years. it will take longer for engineers to make robots more dexterous.
besides, we don't need robots to vacuum our floors and wash our dishes. that's what women are for. _________________

Actually, I recently read an article about a power suit made by the Japanese. It involved putting something on your body that looked like a wetsuit so it could read the electrical signals on your skin, so it could move the mechanical suit you would put on with your actual muscles. They said that in some cases, the machinery would move even before your arm would, so it definitely has a quick enough response. I wish I saved more of my articles.... |

Sounds interesting. But look at us right now in the present. We have many robots doing things for us. We have robots to vacume and wash our dishes. We have robots in facotories building cars and other things for us. Its not to far away that we can have robots doing other things for us. |

wtf? What planet are you from? I NEED robots to do things for me. I hate vacuuming and sweeping and mopping. (Also, I DO know the difference between needing and wanting something.)
BTW, Animat, I posted a link to what you were talking about in my previous post. |
