First off, I'd just like to say that I appreciate any help from anyone, even if it's a link telling me to search a site I'd also like to say that I actually had quite a few questions about running my server, but I just spent an hour searching your site and found the answers to most of my question, so it's not like I ran on here and asked without doing some work myself!
I'm running my server off of a cable internet connection with a 6mb/s or 8mb/s download speed (I cannot remember right now, it's late, but I'm sure it's atleast 6mb/s) and I'm experiencing very odd lag. My current will be 20ms when I enter the zone but my average will be 110ms. I also access my server from another location about an hour away, and my current ping is 360 there (it's dialup, but still, for only being an hour away it shouldn't be 360ms...). So I'm wondering, in order to run a server that gives people connecting decent pings, does it need to be run off of T1 or better? And also, do you have any tips on how to reduce the lag, especially the latency settings and such in game when I hit "escape + c". Btw, I also read about ASSS and unfortunately I do not have a computer with linux on it, and do not wish to have linux. Thanks in advance for your info and tips! Sorry if this is hard to comprehend, im tired and it's late. |

Yeah, I think it is because your on a 56k connection. 56k and cable 6mb are very different indeed. _________________ Haha SpecShip |

i use a 56 that only manges 40kb, can handle msn at the same time, i run my test server some times and can handle 3-4 people plus 2 bot and my self from the same computer i'm shoure it being a dielup wouldent be a problem, are you using and antivirous, firewalls ect that could cause lag in your own computer.
whats the packet loss like?
what are the your server and computer spec's and does this happen with other zones? |

the thing is, when I connect to TW using my dialup modem, I get around 200ms, and that is 2 states away, when I connect to my server on my dialup modem, which is an hour away i get 350ms...
Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate it.
Btw, I'm going to try running ASSS instead. My computer specs are 1.4ghz 640mb ram, 32 meg nividia geo video card, 20gig harddrive with alot of free space. |

Try using the windows application called 'tracert' which can be accessed through the command prompt, or use Trace in Continuum. You'll notice that the number of hops between your system and Trench Wars will be very low. That is because their host, HopOne, is directly connected to the backbone of the internet, thus they are pretty much right after your ISP. Your server is probably though a couple of locations away from the core backbone, which is why your data hits more hops before it gets there. Each hop adds time, and usually the more hops from the backbone, the greater the chance of the hardware there being crappy and easily overloaded, thus causing ping and packetloss spikes. |

Well just because your server pc has 6 mb, doesn't mean it has a good upload. I have 4.1 MEG Download but only 256 Kb/s. upload. |
