Are there currently any projects to rid ourselves of the VIE gfx (officially?)

Yes, but so far, no ones really approved any globally new images yet to force upon the users. Continuum now doesn't support vie's .dlls anymore, so its upon the websites and the users to "illegally" use VIE's images. Unless of course you happen to own the CD (or 5).
