Comments and suggestions are welcome!
Loosly based on the old LAN HOWTO.
How To: Make a LAN Server
Step 1:
Create the basic server as described in the Zone HOWTO.
Step 2:
In your server.ini change the port setting in [Misc] to equal 1000. This assumes you don't have a server on port 1000 already, if you do, simply change it to a different number like 2000.
You will also need to change the map setting to the map you want to use (it must be in the server's folder).
[Misc]
DefaultLevelFile=mymap.lvl
|
Step 3:
In the [Password] section of the server.ini change all of you passwords to something that you can easily remember. More on what these do later in the HOWTO.
[Password]
SysopPassword=sysoppass
EnergyPassword=energy
ModeratorPassword=modpass
SuperModeratorPassword=smodpass
VIPPassword=vippass
|
Step 4:
NOTE: If you already have a LAN zone, you need to look at the billing information on that one, because all of your zones should use the same biller.
Now you need to edit your subbill.ini to have the billing password and also to have the port for the billing server. You should change the password from what I have here. Then save your changes and go back to server.ini.
BillingPassword=billpass
Port=185
|
In the [Billing] section of server.ini change the IP to the IP of the computer you will be running the billing server from. For a LAN server this is almost always the computer that the zone will run on. If it is the same computer, type in 127.0.0.1 instead of the regular IP (This IP is called the loopback address as it always points the the computer it is on).
Now you need to change the port and password to what you had in subbill.ini
[Billing]
Port=185
Password=billpass
|
Now you need to put in the IDs for the biller. Both the ServerId and the ScoreId should be the same as the server's port. The group ID should be 1 unless you know what you are doing.
[Billing]
ServerId=1000
GroupId=1
ScoreId=1000
|
Now you need to put the name of your zone into the billing section
[Billing]
ServerName=My LAN Zone
|
Step 5:
In the [Directory] section you need to change the IP, description and NamePassword. The IP should probably be blank, because you don't want other people trying to get into your zone (as its a LAN server). The description is simply a description of your zone. The NamePassword is the password sent to the directory servers to make sure no one takes your name on in the directory (it doesn't matter much because you wont be connecting to a dir server). Leave the port at 4991, so that if you ever make the zone public, you wont have to change it.
[Directory]
IP=
Description=My Lan Zone!
NamePassword=namepass
Port=4991
|
Step 6:
Now we save all our changes to the files and run the server! First we start the biller by running Subbill.exe (if you don't already have another biller). Next we start the zone by running subgame2.exe. It should work, if it doesn't work then try posting on the forums here with a detailed description of what went wrong. To close the software, press Shift+F12 (Make sure you close subbill.exe last).
Step 7:
because the zone is not on any directory servers, we need to add the zone manually to Continuum. First make sure Continuum is NOT running. Then open the zone.dat in your Continuum folder in notepad. Then you need to add an entry for your LAN server. It will look like mine, except that you need to change the IP and possibly the port. To find your IP on a win95/98/ME system go to Run and type winipcfg and press OK. From the dropdown box select your ethernet card. Your IP is then displayed in the 'IP address' section. You will need to add the same entry (same IP and everything) to all the computers you want to play from.
My LAN server (LOCAL),192.168.0.10,1000,,1
#This is a description of your zone
|
Step 8:
Password stuff: You can login as a sysop (or mod or smod) by typing your SysopPassword with a * in front. So if you used the passwords I gave (BAD IDEA) you would type *sysoppass. You can also add the *sysoppass to the end of your password when you login (This allows you to be a sysop from the moment you login). When you are a sysop, you can edit settings in game by pressing esc+c. A good reference on what all of those setting mean is the SSOS page here at server help. Login on as a mod or as a smod is similar, simply type the pass with a * or add it to your login password. A command list is available here at server help under the 'Commands' link.
The other two passwords (energy and vip) are not for staff powers, but for use by semi-normal players. Entering the energy password will allow you to see all other players energy. The VIP password is for being able to login when the zone is full (this needs to be added to the login password as you never get in game otherwise).
Step 9:
If you want another zone, all you need to do is follow this HOWTO again making sure you use different ports in the [Misc] section. You do not need a second copy of the biller, just use the biller info from your first zone. |

Local Area Network
If you don't know what it is, you probably don't need to know about it. |

You can modify it pretty easily for a normal server.
I think that the only server changes are the directory section. You may also need to forward ports on your firewall tho. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

Yep. Notice "LAN server..." not "Wired LAN server..."

Im having a bit of trouble setting up a lan server...
Problem is, I dont have any form of router setup, nor do I feel like manually setting any IPs at the moment.
So, I can only use 127.0.0.1 for the server.
With the old ss software, this runs fine, but when I try it with the continuum server, when i try to log in I get one of the following messages:
"Client connection request from biller ignored"
"Shutdown request from biller ignored"
It seems to be at random...so I dont know what to change...
It still seems like a setting issue on my part...but I dont have the tolerance to try to figure it out anymore... Help would be appreciated.

in server.ini:
[billing]
IP=localhost (instead of 127.0.0.1)
And everything will work fine. |

| As I recall, the only reason I said to follow the Zone HOWTO was so I didn't have to explain how to unzip it, but Im not 100% sure on that. Try just starting on step 2 with a fresh server directory. |

What closes? If it is subgame2 DOS window which closes immediately after you start it, check if you have not misspelled or missing .lvl in your server dir and server.cfg
---
Now some question (already posted on SSforum.Net since this forum seemed to be down yesterday, but obviously noone responded
I have setup a local server for lvl and lvz testing, and when I try to connect to it with my Continuum client, it says
"Connection request from billing server ignored"
subgame is connected to bill properly, my local "zone" is green with 10ms ping in zone list of the client. I have made a \version1 dir, copied continuum.exe there renamed to subspace.exe, in server.cfg any client is allowed... Everything looks cool, but I can't log in.
What can be wrong? |

Funny thing about my internet, the only people who can access a zone on my computer are those who are outside my LAN. |

| You need to use the 'Add Custom Zone...' button in the zone list and add the zone yourself using the LAN IP. |
