The reason might be because there's no one way easy street to setting up and configuring a bot. If you can't try to learn how yourself, it'll be difficult for others trying to help you.
There are a bunch of plugins already available though, take a look at mervbot.com for example. You can alternatively google for other sources, read the sticky, or use the search function in this forum to find these things.
I don't use mervbot myself, so I can't really help you much in your quest to acquiring these plugins.

and by considering that you asked a really basic question on how to use settings, I wouldn't go around saying you "have your own zone" and stuff like that... And I wouldn't even THINK about bots for now. Start with the basics...

We've all gone through that circle, it's always the same.
You get here and need a bot, you post:
"Can anybode help me? I need a bot to do X"
People here answer:
"No, do it yourself."
You go:
"Wtf... I know you all can code bots... why won't you do it!? Screw you, I'll learn to code and do it myself"
You start to code bots.
Other people come here and need a bot, post:
"Can anybode help me? I need a bot to do Y"
You go:
"Sure, all other people here I mean, I'll do it for you"
You code the bot, get annoyed by all the features he/she wants you to built.
He wants other bots to be made, and other people will bug you to code bots for them.
Other people come here, need a bot, post:
"Can anybode help me? I need a bot to do Z"
You go:
"No, do it yourself."
Because so many people have gone through that circle by now, there are plenty of plugins already available.

Nah, that's not what i meant to say. After all we visit this forum to help other people.
What I'm saying is, you'll have trouble finding a bot coder that does every little thing for you. And I'm sure that's why bak responded that way.
The community here is one of the friendliest I've met btw.

This is the sticky post at the top of this forum... It's usually the first place you click when you are searching something concerning bots. You'll find a shitload of plugins in there. You'll most likely find what you're looking for. There are also instructions on how to make them work, usually.
Just not sure what you mean by 'messaging'
MervBot.com would be the first place to check
And I recommend:
Maverick's bot place
And CypherJF's site has a trivia plugin, apparently... (there are probably others elsewhere as well)
edit: Just noticed Hakaku also posted the link to the sticky thread... Did you check it yet?

What exactly is not working?
Does the bot load?
Does the bot connects to the zone? Plugin or not, it should appear in your zone.
Does the bot says it loaded the plugin?
Try saying /!plugins to the bot, it will tell you which plugins are loaded.
If it's not loaded, try loading it with /!load nameoftheplugin
If the plugin is flag.dll, for example, you'd have to do !load flag
If it can't load it for some reason, it will tell you.
