Post subject: New Directory Server Mirror ssdir.playsubspace.com
In view of the fact there is currently only one directory server, i have setup this backup mirror.

ssdir.playsubspace.com

Please note max simultanious client connections are currently limited to 1.
edit: this has been upped to 10 sim connections now.
edit:

Please not the server is not independent its part of the PSS (Play SubSpace) network.

Rules:
- The server is open for all.
- IPs that attempt or suceed in intentionally crashing the server will be
banned from PSS. (iptables ban)

A second directory server would only work if you can get all of the zones (or at least the major ones) to have this directory server in their server.ini. I hope you can get this done.

Nonetheless, good initiative. Keep it up icon_smile.gif

What directory server are you running? Catid's?
Doc Flabby - Sun Jun 25, 2006 9:50 am
Post subject:
yes, i'm using catid's, i've modified it very slighlty and i'm running it on linux server.

How did you get it to run on a linux server? With gcc?

Downtime. I'm currently in the process installing and upgrading other software on the server expect the directory to fully operational again in approx 24h, so if you cant reach it at the moment don't be surprised.

Allow more then a single concurrent client (its not like it will get leeched) (and even if it does, its not like MB's of data are send to the client).

I don't think I explained this very clearly.

As i understand it there is NO limit (or indeed an option to do so) on the number of client (continuum) downloads.

Limit to one (zone client) upload at a time.
Bandwidth isnt a problem my main concern is memory + cpu usage as the server as i'm running other apps on it tongue.gif

These are my settings (defaults):

Code: Show/Hide

[Core]

// No data kickoff delay from subspace
PacketSilenceLimit=2000

// Higher numbers mean faster uploads, but more ploss
MaxReliableInTransit=3

// Decrease this number if you want to minimize b/w
ChunkSize=496

// PriitK's directories aren't compatible
ClusterMode=0

// Maximum number of simultaneous uploads
MaxHosts=1

Meaning that the directory server will become unresponsive while you play your computer games?
Doc Flabby - Mon Jun 26, 2006 2:20 pm
Post subject:
no this is a serious attempt at providing a directory server.

Its running on a linux vps box (thank you vpslink.com) with 256MB guarenteed RAM served by a shared gigabit connection.

Other services running on it are a webserver (which is running www.getsubspace.com and will be running a new site im still working on ) and a biller and asss.

Having more then one concurrent (simultaneous) connections won't really take that much more memory, right?
Changing it to 5 will make it more accessible as a backup directory server, imo.

Still, keep up the good work icon_smile.gif

Well, im willing to host your directory on my dedicated server if you would like. Im always willing to help SS icon_smile.gif

Just contact me and we'll discuss it further. Seeing as how I am the owner of SST, I am willing to insert the directory into the Server.ini of all the zones I host. I can also try and get others to insert it, also.

Even Priitk's directory server is downloadable. There is also a 'JEDirectoryServer', no source but looks cool though.

Tied to default billers? As in cloning their lists as well as accepting new entries directly?

Yes ssdir.get/playsubspace.com still work.
Doc Flabby - Fri Sep 29, 2006 11:51 am
Post subject:
Its still up. The new config settings allowing more connections seem to have improved its performance as well.

Its not tied to any biller.
Its only affiliation is with the PSS billing network. Which hosts the PSSF zones.

It accepts new entries (direct connections) and clones entries it does not have by downloading the zonelist from the main directory server. Thus providing a complete and usable backup/alternative.

Get more zones to connect to the server!

The main directory server (priitk's) is currently down and the population statistics are showing the statistics coming from ssdir.playsubspace.com.

I added SSCT, ill work on getting some other people to join in. Becoming Priitk independant is a must if this game is going to survive.

just a reminder, make sure your directory entries are upto date, you dont want to loose population if the main server dies, or crashes which has happened in the past.

secondly the server uses my python dir server now icon_smile.gif

Possible Server Downtime
Unfortunately owing to the current way the exchange rates in europe are going, i am having to close the European server, as I can no longer afford to run it. This server was running the directory server. I have moved this to the America server (that hosts the PSS sites).

You shouldn't notice any interruption in service provided the DNS updates go well.

2 Years and still going strong!

Time has gone so fast, thank you to everyone who has given there support to this project. A reminder please support this service by adding ssdir.playsubspace.com as a directory entry.

This project is run purely as a service to Continuum players, that ensures your zone will be locatable, even if the main directory server crashes.

It also provides a good secondary server for those zones that do not wish to appear on the main directory server.

I'm interested to know how many people have found this service useful.

Unfortunatly namecheaps DNS servers have died which means the playsubspace.com domain is down and hence the directory server is inaccessable. Hopefully this will be fixed within the next 24h..

At approximately 10.10am EST we started noticing packet loss and latency to all of our DNS servers. These are geo-graphically diverse and located in 3 different states within North America.
Our entire team was alerted to the issue and working closely with our network vendors, we identified a large scale DDoS attack ( up to 113,000 pps ) against our 3 DNS servers.
Obviously this is a very targeted attack by someone hell-bent on taking our DNS services down. This resulted in connectivity issues for all customers who use our DNS system as well as our own website.
At this point in time, the attacks are mostly filter. We expect services to return to normal shortly.

The server has been down the last 12 hours while we repair it as it has been hacked via a 0-day exploit on our webmail system. Whilst the server is now clean and running, we are awaiting our provider to restore full network functionality, this may take up to 48 hours.

re: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=23633

I highly recommend ALL zones ADD:

Quote:
ssdir.playsubspace.com

to your list of directory servers.

The main server sscentral.sscuservers.net is currently down.

If your zone is not on ssdir.playsubspace.com, no new players can find it. Its in your own zone interests to do this.

ssdir.playsubspace.com has been the backup directory server for OVER 3 years, since 2006, its highly reliably, and runs a custom directory server that I have developed and won't be going away anytime soon, unlike the many other servers that have come and gone over the years.

http://forums.minegoboom.com/viewtopic.php?t=6430

So if you know anyone running a zone, or have connections with anyone who can get this change made, who has not already added it to their list, pester them, escpially thoses big SSC zones who think they don't have to care about this crap, then start wondering where their population is going icon_smile.gif

There seems to be one that doesn't do this, server built up 350 connections and then crashed, i wonder if this is what took out the main directory server...

Hey Doc, linode.com are now providing UK VPS boxes, I have one in London and it's great (download at 10MBPS+). I've had other VPS servers with them for over a year and a half, and have never had a single hitch. I highly recommend them to anybody who doesn't want to shell out loads for dedicated servers. =)

I pay about 13 quid a month/VPS (I have a few of the lower end ones scattered around (CA, TX, UK).

They don't provide Windows, though.

When downloading from SSCentral.com I have noticed odd results with dead zones showing 10 players, and until today just ignored it and laughed it off that doc fixed his 100 player bug creating a 10 player bug.

But today when downloading, I noticed all the zones he probably manually inputed (seeing it is SSCU hosted zones) show 10 players. I tried downloading from only SSDir and found the same issue, returning 10 players for population.

So just figured I'd give ya a heads up.

Hehe, yeah, those are coming from ssdir.playsubspace.com. sa_tongue.gif

Might be wrong, but it seems like doc flabby has been busy with real life and other stuff (assuming this by his recent posting inactivity). Hope he can roll out a fix for Central as soon as he has the appropriate time for it. icon_smile.gif
